Milan to Amalfi ??
Does anyone have an idea how we could on public transport in a day get from Milan to the Amalfi Coast. We have our heart set on a week in Positano in late Sept but for flight and member airline reasons, coming from London we can only fly to Milan, not Rome or Naples.
Also any idea of costs??
Thanks
Jeremy

Steve is correct. You can verify schedules and fares on www.trenitalia.com
Here is an example of a good itinerary:
1. Eurostar lv. Milano Centrale 8:00
arrive Roma Termini 12:30
2. Eurostar v. Roma Termini 13:10
arrive Salerno 15:44
3. Walk 300 yards to ferry dock at Piazza della Concordia
4. Take ferry to Positano (approx. one hour, stops briefly in Amalfi).
The SITA bus from Salerno to Positano requires over two hours and a connection in Amalfi (the ferry is a much better option).

On second thought, there is another way from Milan to Positano which may actually involve less travel time: The Eurostar leaving Roma Termini at 13:10 (noted in my posting above) stops at Napoli Mergellina at 14:54 before proceeding to Salerno. You could get off at Mergellina, walk 500 yards to the Mergellina hydrofoil dock, and take one of the direct hydrofoils to Positano. This avoids the extra 50 minute train ride to Salerno. The Mergellina to Positano hydrofoil schedules can be located on the internet (I believe that there is a mid to late afternoon departure).

I was trying to get into Rome to begin my trip in Positano, but when I couldn't get there with my FFM, I opted to fly into Venice. I will fly from Venice to Naples on Alitalia. I recommend you just fly from Milan to Naples. I am not sure of the cost because I am flying open-jaw from Catania back to Milan. This round trip ticket was $371/ea. Positano is wonderful in September.
