" Yes but what about folks originating train travel in Varenna? I wonder if anyone knows conductor will sell ticket in those cases. Has to be or many folks would have no tickets in case of breakdown of machine and caffe closing. Curious and may put angst to rest for such folks"
If all ticket selling posts (railway station, bar, edicola, tabacchi, food shop, hotel reception or whatever) are closed and if there is no or no working ticket machine, the train conductor will sell tickets without surcharge, BUT ONLY IF YOU CONTACT HIM WHEN YOU BOARD THE TRAIN.
It's always a good idea to ask local people at least some 10 minutes prior to the departure of the train or bus where one can buy tickets.

What to do in Varenna and area
We'll be staying in Varenna for two nights in late May--wish we could stay longer! We plan to take the mid-lake ferry and ride around to see various towns. What other activitiessights would y'all recommend?? Thanks for any suggestions.

The ferry around the lake was my favorite activity; we stayed in Bellagio, but we liked Varenna a lot better. You can also visit the various gardens and villas, The gardens were not at their best when we were there, which was in early June, if I'm not mistaken. I'm not much into visiting the interior of luxurious homes, but it you are, there's that. Not all of the homes can be visited. Other than that, Bellagio is full of overpriced boutiques. There is also some hiking, but it was very hot when we were there, and we were wiped out after our fairly short walks.
We were there for two nights; we had originally planned on three, but had to cut it short. To be perfectly honest, I was glad we didn't have another night there. The restaurants ranged from mediocre to just OK, and what is on offer there just didn't meet my expectations. The scenery is gorgeous, but I live in a part of Italy with lots of gorgeous scenery.

Why do so many folks stay in Bellagio - totally overrun by tourists and not seek out some less mobbed place of which there are many around the lake - like Varenna?
I stayed in Como and really liked it but Como does not have the lakeside ambience of a Bellagio right on the lake. But if you like neat old cities Como may be it.

Re: The Last Supper: We just took a cab less than one hour before closing, and stood in the waiting line for last minute entry tickets. I admit that luckily, the rope crossed over, closing the line, Right in back of us!! So we did it, with no forward planning! Maybe just luck, but worth a try if all else fails!!
