Varenna or Milan? Need Advice

Going to the Italian Grand Prix in September. We are spending Friday/Saturday/Sunday nights either in Varenna or Milan. I know there is plenty to do during the day, but what evening options do we have if we stay in Varenna? Will we be stuck in the town or does the ferry run in the evenings? I know there is nightlife in Milan, but the lure of the lake is pulling me toward Varenna. Any advice?

Will top this for you. My experience in Varenna has been that apart from the restaurants, there isn't a whole lot of "nightlife" in Varenna. May be a bit more so over in Bellagio but that may be a function of the fact that there are more restaurants over there!

Ferries do not run all night and cannot remember how late but that may end up being irrelevant depending on other answers you get here.

Monza is easy to reach from central Milan, at least by rail..and, ironically, it is a stop on the rail line to and from Varenna.

Varenna is extremely beautiful but absolutely dead at night. That didn't bother me for the two nights I was there, but if you're looking for activity, that's not the place. There weren't even that many restaurants. It was a beautiful place for just strolling on the path along the water in the dark, though. Bellagio has a lot more activity as far as I know.

Have you considered Bergamo instead? It's very close to Milan, very beautiful, and I think might be probably reasonably busy at night. I was there for about 10 or 11 hours, but not overnight.

You will love Varenna, and the irony of the Monza stop makes it feasible. I believe the Bellagio ferry runs to about 10:00 in Sept. Go for it !

Thanks! Mostly concerned about restaurants. Small bars are OK too.
