John--we enjoyed Maes B & B--great hosts; delicious breakfast; good location...nice price too.

I stayed at Hotel Kap

I prefered staying near Vondelpark or the Leidseplein area. I don't like the very most "center" parts of the city. Kind of dirty and less safe feeling around the Dam and train station.

We liked the Moevenpick when we were there in August 2007. I was prepared not to like it but it turned out fine and DW wants to go back. The fact that we got a free upgrade to a suite probably has some bearing on this! ;^)

I see people can often snag a room there for 100-120 USD a night through Priceline. For a modern and scrupulously clean hotel in Amsterdam that's a bargain!

A restaurant we enjoyed was 1st Classe in the old first class waiting room at Centraal Station. It's right beside track one and has either a brasserie or more formal side.

We stayed at Boogaard's B&B and loved it - fantastic location (about a 5 - 10 minute walk from Centraal) on a quiet street in central Amsterdam, fantastic host (Peter) who made us feel at home rihgt away and cooked excellent breakfasts, and really nice rooms.

I stayed at the Hotel Brouwer in August/September 2008 and the have new flat screen TV's. Free Internet, good breakfast and friendly staff. They also have an elevator! I paid 60 euros for a single room.
