May trip to Ireland/Wales & London
My husband and I are flying from LAX to London then on to Shannon - renting a car and traveling Southern Ireland (no major towns) - turning in the car - then taking the ferry out from Rosslare to Wales. Is train travel available once in Wales? We really don't want to rent another car, but are packing light and would like to have the rail take us around Wales and England (we'll have only 3 nights) before arriving in London for 5 nights before flying home.

Any suggestions? I wanted to see the Lake District, but realize now that is too far north and will have to wait for another trip.

Thank you - I need help! Then I will book my London B&B. Susan
Yes.
There is a railway in Fishguard.I must admit I'm not sure whether you can still cross from Rosslare to anywhere else e.g. Pembroke or Swansea. Before I speculate too far perhaps you could just check that you are sailing into Fishguard in which case I hope your worries are over.

Following on from my last post try trainline.com which will give you train times out of Fishguard.
As for seeing the rest of Wales or some of it,what do you want to see and what are your interests?
I have posted at length about 18months ago on Wales but I must admit its a while since I lived in the south and my knowledge is more of the north. Try a search on Wales and then come back with your interests

I can send you folders of notes on the Pembrokeshire National Park [Fishguard area] and/or North Wales if you e-mail me. [email protected]

If arriving at Fishguard, head west to St Davids, this is the smallest city in the UK with a beautiful cathedral. assuming you are interested in the coastal region head south towards to Haverfordwest which is the main bus or train link I guess and then head west. There are lovely villages all along the coast for example: Little Haven, St Brides, Dale, Then further East is Monorbier (The castle here was used for the filming of parts in the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe Film) Saundersfoot and Tenby are larger and are really tourist towns.Heading East Dylan Thomas's town of Laugharne is a beautiful place.
If the coast is not for you let us know what interests you and we can give some further advice

Muck

If you take a ferry into Fishguard or Pembroke, I would suggest renting a car and driving thru Wales (southern half) and onto Stonehenge and Bath - where you can drop-off the car and train in to London. I did just the opposite trip afew yrs ago and would recommend it. There are plenty of castles, old churches/moasteries, and dolmens/stone circles/etc. to keep your ride interesting thru Wales.
