We just returned from Prague, Budapest, Bruges and Amsterdam (search for trip report under my name - it doesn't come up under country selection).
Yes, this year was an exception. They had no spring. Just cold and rain.
We were very lucky. The rain stopped as we got there. While Prague was a bit cool (cold and a bit windy in the evenings), I'll take that over rain any day.
The rest of the trip was sunny and it got into the 80s for Bruges and Amsterdam.
I like to travel in early June. It usually beats the big crowds and gives the longest days.
It didn't get dark until well after 10PM.
One evening I wanted to see the lights on at the Cstle and Bridge in Prague. We decided to eat dinner after.
Well, we didn't eat until after 11PM!!!!

Hi InMiami, I was in Vienna late May 2004, and Prague and Budapest mid May 2005. My opinion is that the weather during this period -- early May to early June -- is really iffy. When I was in Vienna, the first two days were great (around 15C, sunny but breezy), the next two days were cold (8C) with intermittent showers, the day after was back to sunny and breezy, then back to showers and on Day 8 prior to leaving for Frankfurt, I got three seasons in a day culminated with light snow on the way to the airport! Was luckier when I was in Prague -- sunny throughout -- but weather turned the week after during my business portion of the visit. Budapest was cloudy with frequent showers. Best time seems to be mid June for more sun and stable weather.

Good ideas here! I talked to a close friend that just returned from Vienna. The temperature was in the 90's! Very unusual. I am also from Miami so you would think we would be OK with the heat. I guess the idea of travel brings up visions of chilly mornings and wearing a jacket. But, we just got back from Paris in early May and the rainy weather was a bit of a downer. I guess I need to think this over some more.

Our late May/early June trip to Salzburg was cool, bordering on just plain cold and it wasn't all that much warmer in Vienna.
But when I took my parents to Vienna in early June a few years ago, it was in the 90s. Every day (and this wasn't the heat wave summer of 2003 when everywhere was hot)
Central European weather can be highly variable...from chilly to hot and humid. I wouldn't book a hotel in any of these three cities without AC for a stay in June unless I had no other choice. Because if you do hit a hot and muggy spell, you will really wish you had it. My parents, in particular, would have been totally wiped out if the hotel hadn't had AC.

For the most part, I think weather is so unpredicatable you just have to plan and go - except for maybe some parts of southern Europe in August. We just got back from 2 weeks in Germany/Czech Republic/Austria in early June. They had a particularly cool/cold and wet spring. However, during our trip we didn't have a drop of rain and had gorgeous weather for most of the time (50s at night and 70s/low 80s during the day). The last few days were actually hot (low 90s, which is very unusual), but it was comfortable in the shade due to low humidity and cooled down at night. And yes, the days were long - sunrise about 4:30 am and sunset about 9:30 pm.
