Masterpiece Theater-CORFU
Years ago I met Gerald Durrell at a benefit at our Franklin Park zoo. At the time he owned a zoo on the Island of Jersey. As an animal lover who read all of his books, I couldn't have been more thrill edhad I met my favorite fim star. At that time his brother, Lawrence wrote the magnificent, "Alexandria Quartet."
Tomorrow at 9 pm PBS, the book, "My family and other animals," is brought to the screen, it covers his childhood in Corfu.

"My Family and Other Animals" and "Birds, Beasts, and Relatives" were my favorite books when I was little. I had them in a combined edition and I used to read that book over and over... When I moved to Italy I bought it in Italian, and I later got it in Modern Greek as well. I am so disappointed that this is not playing in my area (southern New England) -- I just checked the schedules but it's not on there. Will you who watch it post back and let us know if it was really good? I'd buy a copy from them if it was really well done.
By the way, those of you who may not know -- you can visit their house in Corfu

Heres another Gerry Durrell fan.
I loved the series of his books chronicling his family's hilarious adventures in Corfu (in addition to the ones mentioned, the were others such as "Fillets of Plaice" I must have read those books at least 10 times during my early teens !
I'm disappointed to have missed the PBS special; I don't think we got it here in Toronto, though I could be wrong. However, can anyone tell me if this special featured Brian Blessed as Spiro ? or was it a new version ?
If it was the former, then I don't feel so bad as I have it on Video that I bought years ago.
I also loved Laurence Durrell's 'White Eagles over Serbia"

Thanks, Cigale.
Just from looking at the cover of the DVD, the characters look much more like what I imagined them to be, than they do in the version I have. However, I always imagined 'mother' to be a short, plump woman with dark hair and thick black rimmed glasses.
The episode with the scorpion at the lunch table has got to be one of the funniest ever written.
