Malta: Europe for Scaredy Cats
I thought this was an interesting article. Since I'm sure copying and pasting is a no-no, here's the website. I'm not sure how long it will be accessible online:

Just how laid back are they ... ?
Well, last year we spent a week each on Gozo and Malta. For our Gozo stay we rented a holiday home from a chap in England who suggested that I call John's Garage in Victoria and rent a car, since the bus service isn't so good on Gozo, and there are fewer cars (the only downside about Malta is the driving, which is insane). I called the garage, gave them my name and the dates we would be there. They asked for no credit card information and told me that the car would be waiting for us at the ferry terminal with the door open and the keys under the mat. We could go in the next day and sign a contract. And that is exactly what happened. We were totally charmed and continued to be charmed by these friendly, gracious, dignified people.
