And I am impressed that you maintained your appetite when you were sick! Usually, all that appeals to me are saltine crackers, dry toast or a Japanese rice gruel that my mother used to cook for me as a child.

Tom, I'm enjoying your report immensely! Thanks for the entertainment, and fab photos. Sorry about your illness, but you've struggled through like a trooper.

BTW...tell your wife, she's not the only one hooked on Law and Order!

Calabria… not to hijack this thread, but as a L@O fan you'll probably enjoy this old piece by Molly Haskell ...one of our NYC treasures. (My husband and I followed just as she said.) After my husband died I dropped Law and Order. But recently found myself back in its throes…. the old one with Sam Waterston, Jerry Orbach etc. Have never watched the spinoffs.

Ditto! Happily, there's a German TV station that shows multiple episodes in English every day. Jerry Orbach was/is my favorite detective. We like seeing Linus Roache, one of the ADAs in the later seasons, now chewing up the scenery in Vikings. He makes a great king of Wessex.

In the late 1990s, we spent several months living in NYC in The Boulevard on 86th and Broadway. They filmed two L&O episodes there during our stay. It was fun to see the show being made.

(sorry to continue the hijack!)

Still following and amazed at your optimism and persistence, despite your illness. And that goes double for Tracy!

Looking forward to the next installment.

I am so impressed with Tracy. I'd have mumured sympathetic nothings in my husband's ear as I tucked him in then headed off to hit the town on my own. Bring back provisions and check in maybe twice a day for signs of life, sure.

"I am so impressed with Tracy."

If I did nothing else in my life…at least I married well above my pay grade.

Ahhh. A, airline strike! Can't wait to hear how you coped with that!

I coped with an AF strike in Dallas! Much worse going back to the same hotel every day in Dallas rather than being stuck in Paris! (I was also stuck in Tahiti for 3 extra days once -- not due to a strike but because I was flying standby -- it really didn't bother me at all to extend my stay every day. Of course, when you are an airline employee flying standby, you often put a 'cushion' in your vacation days to deal with this sort of contingency. Each extra day in Tahiti just reduced the number of days that I had planned for Los Angeles, so it was a win-win situation.)

Hoping for more....

Plus, I have a question about cafes in the area of your apartment. I will be in a studio on rue Sainte-Croix de la Bretonnerie in a week. Your street Ts into it and I wondered if you had any casual stop-for-a-wine/coffee place you could recommend? I have quite enjoyed your trip details and your humor; thanks for all the effort to post such a great report.

Basically all of the places on rue Sainte-Croix are mixed during the day and gay as soon as the sun sets. I don't know if this makes a difference to you.

Nope, I already knew it was a gay area. Just hoping for a cafe that's relatively close. I'll be in Paris for 12 days and this trip I'm determined to do some cafe sitting as I have been too busy seeing 'the next thing' in past visits! I'm thinking probably a pre-sunset timeframe in any case. Thanks kerouac.

Yes, Tom, you are a trooper! But we have to hear the end of the story.....

And yes, you did, apparently, marry way above your pay grade. But Tracy is still putting up with you, so you must be doing something right. Maybe it's that great sense of humor of yours that keps her around!!
