Is it possible to get from the airport to Toledo without going by train to Madrid? Bus?

Yeah, hire a car and drive around the city.

If you're looking for the most convenient route, that's Cercanias train to Atocha station and high-speed train to Toledo.

You can take the ALSA bus from T4 to Toledo, about 1hr 30min, but it doesn't run very often, with the only departure showing at 09:30.

Other than that, you will have to go into the city (metro or bus) and catch the ALSA bus at PLAZA FERNANDEZ LADREDA, s/n (MADRID (PLAZA ELIPTICA).

Take the yellow airport express bus to Atocha and then the train to Toledo. 5€ into town and Atocha. Very easy and cheap.

I'm doung this same trip in May. Is there any reason to prebook a ticket from Madrid to Toledo or is it easy to buy tickets when we arrive? We'll be arriving on a Monday morning.

When I went from Madrid to Toledo upon arrival on a Thursday morning, the train was sold out. I had to wait for the next train.

It is easy to buy ticket ... but not necessarily the train you want. I took the 9:10am Avant train to Toledo using tickets I bought a week earlier. On the day of trip, I noticed all the morning trains to Toledo were sold out!

it would be impossible or risky to pre pay a ticket to Toledo for the ame morning you arrive. (IMO). There is a Renfe office in the airport terminals T1 and T4, so you may be able to speed up the process there when you land, asking for a train about an hour and a half later.. giving you time to get to the station and even have a coffee or snack at one of the numerous restaurants.

Actually, the airport upon arrival is a great place to get tickets for your trip as lines can be shorter. All tickets bought at a window DO have a small fee added to them, though. You can buy many tickets at a self serve kiosk .

if you are over 60, you may want to buy the 6E senior card to give you discounts on trains for tickets with more flexibility if you need to cancel. However, sometimes there are fares that are cheaper than the senior fare but be sure to ask. Card lasts for one year.

if you wish to purchase tickets online, it is only 12.90 euros
one way.
