München / Innsbruck

(My apologies that this is similar to a post made by someone else in November.) I’m travelling with a colleague to a three-day business conference in Innsbruck at the end of this month, and we’re booked via London to Munich. Two years ago when we travelled from Munich to Salzburg we hired a car, but looking at current rates on the Internet they are horrendously high, much higher than I remember from previously, probably because our currency has weakened substantially. Anyway, not an option, and we don’t need a car while in Innsbruck, so we’re looking at train or bus.

Getting to Innsbruck seems OK, we have almost a full day if needed. From my Web research it seems as if we catch the S8 to Ostbahnhof and then the train to Innsbruck. But coming back, we have less time. Our flight leaves Munich at 17h10, the conference ends at 13h00. It seems that the only feasible train leaves Innsbruck at 12h43, so we’ll have to leave the meeting early. It’s at the Europa Tyrol (hey, I don’t choose the expensive hotels, that’s someone else’s decision!) and it seems as if the railway station is across the road from the hotel. So about to hours to Ostbahnhof, then allow another hour to change and get to Flughaven Terminal.

I’ve tried to look for a bus that would allow a slightly later departure. The Munich airport site shows buses by Four Seasons Travel that travel six times a day to Innsbruck. But strangely, only two are shown in the reverse direction (8h00 and 20h00). Can anyone give me any other alternatives? Or tell me if any of the above is incorrect?
Correction. Taking a more careful look at the Internet timetables, I see that the 12h43 train from Innsbruck requires a change (maybe it's via Salzburg?), and far better would seem to be one at 12h37, which is direct and arrives a lot earlier. I also see that the 12h37 for some reason can't be booked online. Are these trains typically full at this time of year? Or can we rely on being able to get tickets once we're there? Ideally in Innsbruck, in case we find that we can catch a lift from somone else who is travelling back to Munich.

You can reserve a supershuttle-type van from Innsbruck to the Munich Airport for nearly the same price as a first class train ticket.

Just book the ticket when you get to Innsbruck but at this time of the year you won't need to anyway. Ostbahnhof to Airport is about 35 mins but max wait is 20 mins - if you are unlucky and just miss it. You should be OK as long as no significant delays.

All the trains I ever took from Munich to Innsbruck left from the main station.
There is no need to go to the east station in Munich.
Some of the trains make a stop at the east station some 9 minutes later, but based on the 12 schedules I just looked at, ALL of them leave from the main station.

The no change connections leave every two hours during the day starting at 7:30 until 19:30. Usually these trains leave from platform 12 or 13.

Those connections involving a change of trains take about 30 minutes longer. The change is usually at Rosenheim.
Bob is right - but getting back you shoudl definitely get off at Ostbahnhof as getting to your S bahn connection is much quicker (2mins vs say 6-7) (and S8 line is 10 minutes closer to airport from Ostbahnhof than Hauptbahnhof) and Hauptbahnhof takes that extra 10 minutes that you will not want to use up!

Many thanks guys. I thought that the East station was the closest main connection to the airport north of the City? And that the S8 was the connection to there? But either way, I assume that we'll be able to find a rail ticket office at the airport (we're reasonably experienced travellers, although not German-speaking), and we'll be given the right tickets and directions.
