Luxembourg City to Amsterdam

We are going on a roadtrip to Europe very soon. We land in Frankfurt and will be driving down to Innsbruck and then on to Zurich then Basel then Kanzersteg and then up to Luxembourg City on our way to Amsterdam. We would love to go via the Rhine Valley and any towns we may have overlooked. We have to still find a place to stay between Luxembourg City and Amsterdam and would like the best scenic route and town to stay over in. Many thanks.

I'm not sure I understand your wish here. You have to leave the Rhine Valley pretty quickly, by about Strasbourg, to get to Luxembourg City, and the stretch from Basel to Lux Cityis not that interesting anyway. Do you mean that you want to return to the Rhine after leaving Lux City and follow it up toward Amsterdam? If so, you want to head over the Bingen and then follow the Rhine north to Koblenz. if you want to turn a 7 hour drive into a 9 hour one, you can meander along the Mosel river as far as Cochem, and then cut over to Rudesheim, or Bacharach, before joining the Rhine northward. Bacharach would be a nice play to stop that is about halfway along this route. Once you get to Koblenz, head back on the motorway, to make up for all that twisty river valley driving you have been doing and head straight to Amsterdam.

Thank you for your reply appreciate it so much - we will be staying overnight in Kandersteg and the next night in Luxembourg - we can skip Basel what do you suggest where can we stay after Luxembourg on our way to Amsterdam keeping in mind the Rhine Valley? Cplogne too far out of the way?

It wouldn't really make sense to stop in Cologne on your way to Amsterdam. Maastricht would be a good place to stop - a lovely town.
The most direct route would be Maastricht-Eindhoven-Utrecht-Amsterdam. On what day are you driving this? Try to avoid rush hour traffic around the cities on weekdays.

If you want to follow the Rhine, skip Luxemburg and stop in Cologne instead. Otherwise you will be going east again from Luxemburg, Amsterdam is to the north west.

Renting car in Germany and returning in amsterdam could result in high dropoff charges - consider returning car in Aachen - neat old city - or Cologne and taking trains to Amsterdam - book early as www.bahn/de/en for discounted farea. www.seat61.com has great tips on doing that yourself online - general train info and hints on where to go by train or car BETS-European Rail Experts and www.ricksteves.com.
