Lunch recommendations for Istanbul and Athens

Planning our April trip and would love recommendations for tasty local meals in both locations. River views in Istanbul? Acropolis views in Athens?
Thanks for any help you can give.

CD,
was wondering if you are going on a cruise? your few posts are looking similar to my september itinerary on the zuiderdam. I went to Greece in 2001. I will pull my file and do a quick bit of research to see where we ate. As I recall we had some memorable meals in Athens - we were there 6 days after a two week trip through Italy and Greece.

It's a combination. We will be in Istanbul 3 days, Athens 2 days and cruising the Islands 6 days. However, Holland was one that I did check out and we have cruised on the Zuiderdam before, she's a good ship. It just cracked me up when we boarded the first time, one of the staff said, "welcome to the dam ship"
Thanks for any help, I appreciate it!

I shall go down today and pull out my scrapbooks. There was one restaurant in Athens we liked so much we ate there about 4 times (lunches and dinners) in a period of 6 days.

Not a recommendation, but a caution: I got violently ill after eating a favorite local delicacy made with minced tripe for lunch in Istanbul. Made the overnight train to Ankara most unpleasant!

Thanks for the reminder. I always take meds along just in case that happens. My doc gives me a scrip for suppositories and I pack them. They came in real handy once on a cruise when I contacted norovirus.

For Athens, there are plenty of places to eat in the Plaka. Pick the busy places because they usually have the best food. Another good place for lunch and people watching is Kolonaki Square. There are plenty of cafes around. If the weather is nice you can sit outside.

If you want a very nice restaurant in Istanbul, you should do Divan in Ortakoy (not the other location in the Divan hotel in Taksim).

Another very nice place is the Ciragan Palace Hotel on the Bosphorus. VERY EXPENSIVE.

Have you read my trip reports on Istanbul and Greece?

In Istanbul --- Hamdi Restaurnat - very near to the Spice Bazaar- nice views - excelent food and service- try for a table near to the windows on a higher floor-

In Ortakoy section - directly on the Bosphorus - perfect views especially at night with lights of nearby Mosque, the bridge and shoreline-

some of the best food in Istanbul in my opinion.

Picking a busy place in the Plaka sounds like a good piece of advice. I searched for Athens and Istanbul trip reports but did not see yours.

I already have Hamdi on my list! Sounds wonderful.

Thanks to you both.

If you do a GOOGLE search, my reports will pop up. For Greece, type in <thessaloniki thingorjus>. For Istanbul, type in <Istanbul thingorjus>.

I read your Athens report and it made for good reading. I learned to not order mixed drinks but to stick with wine and that I am a lower class female as my toenail polish and fingernail polish match.

I can't find your Istanbul report. I've searched Fodors under "Turkey In The Straw: Thingorjus Sleeps in Istanbul." and I Googled it. I found a lot of references to it but did not find the report itself.
