On the street that curves up from the Thames bridge toward Windsor Castle, there is a really neat little pub that will be to your right, with the castle grounds to your left, as you walk up the street. Problem is, I can't remember the name of the pub. But the village of Windsor is small, and you'll find it easily enough. If you go on along that street past the road toward the castle and about another block, you'll find another pub.

There is a really good small pub right at the main entrance to the Great Park. If you walk south down the sort of alley from the main entrance of the castle grounds you will arrive at the main gate and the pub is there. I am sorry I do not recall the name but they do nice pub grup and it is a very friendly place. I found it to be just far enough off the "beaten path" to not be packed with tourists. Check it out. Perhaps some Windsor resident can provide the name.

If you ask the guards in a real nice way sometimes commoners that are touring the grounds are invited in to have lunch with the Queen. It is a random choice but it seems that only those that are pretty well dressed are selected. I saw two nice ladies get picked out of the crowd and escorted into the castle for lunch. What a thrill that would be. I think the menu is usually pretty simple, like cucumber sandwiches and tea, but at least you get to eat with the Queen and that is quite an honor.

We had a great lunch at Drury House, on one of the side streets leading to the castle. The house belonged to Nell Gwynn, and there is a tunnel leading to the castle. The website gives directions. http://www.druryhouse.royal-windsor.com/

i just did this same thing!!!
we stored our large carry on (3.5 pounds)9 in the terminal we were leaving from next (there is NOWHERE to store carry-ons, etc. in all of windsor for security reasons.)
then we went to the local bus stop, lane 6 or 7 outside terminal 2 where we were...caught the bus to windsor (20 min ride, every half hour service) total of 10 pounds for three adults.
then got off bus in front of castle.. too tired to tour it, but enjoyed the sunny weather all over the lovely town. wandered later towards the thames, got a mini boat ride.. 40 minutes, every hour on the hour- up to the locks, passing windsor race track, and had a nice lunch on our way back to bus top at royal oaks pub which has nice food, beautiful flowered patio at base of castle. on a corner near the train station.
there are a couple nice looking restaurants on the water. and a nice pub which didn´t open until noon.. and we were just not in the mood for a large meal.. but enjoyed our pàtio stay, and the waiters were very friendly.

this is an easy do from heathrow.. and we actually were back IN the airport at 2 pm, not having rushed at all.
could have been there earlier, or found plenty to do for a longer overlay.
very relaxing. our next 2.5 hours in airport were so boring!
taxi to windsor 20-25 pounds each way.(we asked).
the bus was fine. and easy .. and cheap.

although it was sunny most of the time..it was downright cold when the clouds came out. luckily we had jackets on the boat ride.
i saw the restaurants that were mentioned here.. they looked really nice.
enjoy your layover.

A few options for you:

1. Ye Olde Harte & Garter a chain steak house which is opposite Windsor Castle. If you go upstairs you can "sometimes" get a table overlooking Windsor Castle. Food so so really a bog standard steak house...

2. Up around the cobble streets to the right of the entrance of Windsor Castle there are a few cafe/coffee houses situated in an oldy worly street and house feel. They serve the normal sandwiches, cream teas etc...

3. Walking over the bridge to Eton there are a few little places to eat. There's "Monty's restaurants" which again you could get a table overlooking the river, however prices are a little high (but you're paying for the view).
http://www.house-on-the-bridge.co.uk/montys.htm

4. Or there is the "The Cockpit" in the High Street (17th century coaching inn). Used to be used for cockfights now an Italian Restaurant.
http://www.royal-windsor.org.uk/eats.htm

5. If it's a sunny day you could always go to the "Donkey House" pub which is along Thames Walk. Head towards the bridge that takes you to Eton and then on the Windsor side take a right and walk to the end of the road. There is a towpath that will also take you to Romney Lock (~1/2 hour if that). Again food is very so so - plain old pub grub - but nice to sit outside and watch the boats go by.

http://maidenheadsc.users.btopenworld.com/thedonkeyhouse28th.htm
Above: Pictures of the pub (really it's not a bikers pub by day and yes really it is safe!)

Lisa, thanks for your info regarding 'times'.. We bought the tkts for the London Eye (including boat ride) for 4:00pm and we are expecting to leave Windsor by 2:00, to arrive in time for the ride, but we had no idea if that would be enough time to walk around.. That was very useful.

All check all the pubs and pick one! Thanks for all the information..
Patricia
Hi there...

You'll probably be better off just having a pub lunch at the Donkey House (if the sun is shining). The Cockpit is more of a restaurant so might use up too much of your time. However, IMHO it would still be worth going over the Bridge to Eton and having a look.

Have fun eitherway...

BFN

http://royal-windsor.com/galleryeton.htm
Above: Some more pictures.
