Luggage Lockers

I'll be traveling to Germany for the first time since 1990, traveling by train, and staying with friends most of the time. I had hoped to stop in a few cities en route to the homes of friends to spend a couple of hours in museums. Specifically, I want to visit the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz, the Deutsches Museum in Munich, and the Lutherhalle in Wittenberg. But--will I be able to store my luggage either in the train station or the museums while making 3-4 hour visit before continuing on my way? Thanks for any advice.

Dear Lynnewriter,
Perhaps you know something of security since 9/11.
Storing luggage in a public place is not an option anywhere in N.A. or Europe.
Good luck!

I don't know where mikemo gets his (mis)information. There are lockers for your luggage at every major train station in Germany. In Mainz, you'll find some near track one by the elevators near in the main hall and also on the lower level. I used them myself last summer.

Make sure you have a map of Mainz before heading off for the museum - it and the old town center lie at roughly 1 or 2 o'clock as you exit the front of the station.

This service is offered at all larger train stations, take a look at: http://www.bahn.de/pv/view/service/b...fsplaene.shtml
This site not only has 98 stations, but also shows exactly where the lockers (Schließfach) are located.

There are both lockers and in many cases, such as Munich, a "left luggage" room which is attended and where you don't necessarily need "exact change."

Glad you asked about that, Lynnewriter.
My daughter and I will be traveling not only in Germany, but 4 other European contries as well. I know Germany has the rail lockers, but how about the others? Specifically, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, and France? Thanks for more advice. [email protected]

We left our backpacks in a locker for 1 or 2 Euro for 24-hr period in Arnhem (Netherlands), and Koblenz then Freiburg (Germany).
