If you are checking a bag, common sense would say only put things in your carry-on that you need during the flight or that you would need in case your checked bag is lost. For most people that ain't much. Just an extra set of underwear, a toothbrush, and toothpaste. I also carry my camera and notebook computer.

Sorry - it may have been a bargain price - but that doesn't make it a good buy if it isn't practical.
If you can, I'd return that bag and buy one you can actually manage. This one is 30 inches long. That is huge. And saying - "oh, I won't fill it up" sort of defeats the purpose of having a large bag. Having a huge piece of luggage 1/2 full is still a huge piece of luggage. And even just 3/4 full will likely put you near the 50 lb limit.
If you can return it, buy a 22 or at most 24 inch bag. You will be happier all around.

<< What about the lithium-ion batteries typically used in digital cameras? If they are prohibited, my camera must, in effect, be also. >>
Were you thinking of putting your camera in your checked bags? I would STRONGLY advise against doing that! Bring your camera on the plane with you. As someone else has already said above - do not check valuables.
The camera is not prohibited as the batteries are removable but the camera can be checked with the batteries in it. The rules are about spare lithium batteries.
Read the TSA web site restrictions and you will not have to ask! Rules change over time and you need to be current.
