Help with packing rules
Is mascara allowed in carry-on? Must it be placed in the ziploc bag?
Can I carry on both a purse and a carry-on suitcase? I read the rules and I am still not clear. If I check my bag--I would lock it using a TSA approved lock. Anyone done this? I am taking a trip to Europe.
Thanks,
Jennifer

Yes you can take a purse and a carry on bag. And yes, you can use a TSA lock and they work well. Liquid mascara must go in ziplock bag and be less than 3 oz. which it should be. If it is cake mascara, doesn't have to go in bag.

Yes, mascara must be in a quart sized ziplock bag. As well as lip gloss, anything liquid, lotion, or jel. Any container, even if it is almost empty, over 3 oz, must be in your checked luggage. You can have a carry on bag and 1 personal item, such as a purse. TSA locks are fine.

Thank you all for your quick responses..now is lipstick also considered a liquid -- if so I will put it in the ziploc as well.
I plan to carry on my luggage then as I am a compact packer. I will lock the bag once the inspection is over. Luckily my hotels in Europe have a hairdryer, shampoo, etc. It is just that I prefer my shampoo and I will transfer some to a transportable bottle less than 3oz.--in the ziploc of course.

I put a bit of plastic wrap/saran wrap on each liquid bottle before I put it in my zip lock. Unscrew cap, put the plastic wrap over the top of bottle and then screw the cap back on. I did this with the bigger bottles of liquids inside my checked bags too and didn't have any problem with leaks.

Check with your airline. For example British Airways allows a purse (or small personal item) and 1 carryon going over to the UK but you are not allowed the personal item coming back to US (it can fit inside your carryon, which, of course, must still fit their criteria). Double check with the airline you are flying, you could be in for a rude shock if you don't.
Mascara must go in ziplock bag, but once past security you can take it out and put it in your purse Lipstick (tube) is not considered a liquid it can stay in your purse.

Thank You Debit and Lori--for the helpful tips and information. I am flying Lufthansa and it says that Business and First Class are allowed two bags, but nothing about economy! So I will ask the consolidator about it where I buy my tickets.
You have been Great!
