I am wondering about the luggage allowance for airplane flights, I know that the websites themselves explain it, but I think I need some clarification

I booked with Iberia Airlines, but my Flights from Los Angeles to Boston and Boston to Los Angeles are operated by American Airlines, and I looked at my itinerary on checkmytrip.com
and each says the baggage allowance is 2 pieces per traveler

so here's my question(s), does the carry on bag count as one of the 2 pieces?
and what things aren't allowed for carry on? what's the limit for liquid bottles?
what kinds of things can't I put in my non-carry on bag? just really obvious dangerous items?
last thing, I have a picture of my bag, and does it say "steal me!" ?

Your carry on does not count as checked baggage. According to the AA web site you may have 6 pieces of checked baggage but you pay for every piece within the US.

Since you haven't given a clue as to what you plan to carry in your checked bags I would suggest you go to the AA web site and the TSA web site for information about what you can carry in checked baggage as there are restriction shown for both carry on and checked. Some items include: lithium batteries, alcohol over 140 proof, more than 5 kilos of ammunition, mace, cleansers and many more.

I wouldn't steal your bag as it looks too large for me to lift! From where do you think someone would steal it? And there's no telling what people will or will not steal.

Any liquid or gel in your carry on is limited to 100 ml (3.4 ounces) each and you may have only as many as will fit in a one quart ziplock bag. Medications, including saline solution for contact lenses, are exempt from this rule. Check out www.tsa.gov/311/ for more info on this and other carry on restrictions.
The two bag rule for carry on is one piece of luggage (like a roll aboard bag that will fit in an overhead bin, usually 21" or less) plus one "personal item" like a purse, computer bag, shoulder bag,etc.
Limitations on the size and weight of checked bags are posted on your airline website. Many now charge a fee for each checked bag, which you will have to pay at the airport. Do NOT put anything valuable in your checked bag (electronic equipment, jewelry) or any medications or anything that you could not live without for a few days (or longer.) Always carry a change of clothes in your carry on.

well i suppose somethings i would put in my non-carry on luggage
would be (other than clothes of course) a shaving razor, extra deodorant, my own shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste, and other stuff like that.
does toothpaste apply to the 3.4 oz liquid restriction?
and they will let me take on gum on the plane right?

i meant "steal me" because it stands out, you know? but i guess since it does sort of stand out, it could work either way

Yes, toothpaste is included in the restricted items. You can take a travel size tube as long as it meets the 3-1-1 requirements. Full size tube needs to go in your checked bag along with any other toiletries not meeting the 3-1-1 restrictions. And be sure you put those checked bag liquids inside a sturdy ziplock bag in case they leak in transit.

It is only certain types of batteries that are restricted in carry on bags - see the TSA web site for details.

You really need to check the airline's site for all restrictions as your original message pertains to both carry on and checked luggage. You can carry batteries in both carry on and checked luggage. You cannot put LITHIUM batteries in checked luggage.

Toothpaste does apply to the hand luggage restrictions.

What matters is the Iberia restrictions on luggage, not the American. Since you are ticketed through to an international destination, I don't believe you will be charged for a checked bag on American.

For Iberia, if you look at their website, the limit on a carryon bag is 10 kilos (22 lbs) and dimenstions of 55 + 40 + 20 centimeters, the checked bag is limited to 23 kg, and the dimensions are also listed in centemeters.

I agree with Adrienne, the bag is huge, just way to big to handle. In Italy the trains are the equivalent of about 2 steps straight up from the platform, and you can't roll it up the steps, you have to swing it up. Also, in Italy, there are very few modifications for the handicapped, so no nice ramps to roll luggage or working elevators in evidence. When you change trains, you generally have to heft your stuff down one set of stairs under the tracks, and up another. When you're actually on the train, the luggage goes above your head. Are you able, and do you want, to helf that over your head? I would strongly urge you to limit your suitcase to a 22" at most rolling suitcase or duffle.

Remember you can buy all that toiletries stuff in Europe. It's not mandatory that you bring it with you.

Regarding your bag. I see it's a 30inch roller. There's usually a hefty charge for bags that weigh over 50 pounds.

for the luggage, i just got it today, so i don't think i could get another one so fast, and I've read some of the iberia buggage allowance, 23kg is about 50 pounds right? then it will be no problem for me having to carry it around at times, I am small, but i can put a lot muscle into things, it's a good thing i have so much energy.
the bag is not as big as it looks...well, maybe it is if you consider..lets see about 26-28" big, then yeah, but i'd rather have a sort of big one than two bags, you know?

oh it is 30"? I'm not sure how much it weighs without anything in it, I couldn't find the info. but I don't think I'll pack it up past 50 It'll just have my clothes in it and it's not too much things

I would roll tee shirts since the wrinkles fall out when hung up but would not roll button-down shirts or pants unless you're taking jeans.

How much stuff are you taking? How long is your trip? The web site where you bought your bag states it's a 30 inch - not 26 or 28 inch. It's a giant bag! I checked your other posts and see you're traveling to 7 cities. You're gonna get sick of hauling this bag around. Trust me on this. Are you taking taxis in cities? I hope you're not counting on getting this bag on city buses. Try not to kill anyone with it - LOL.

oh no i'm not going to take this on everything i get on, I have hotels I'll stay at and I'll just leave it there and I made sure my hotels are walking distanced from the trains, except Paris, since there are tons of stations there

oh yeah another question i have, let's say I have some train tickets and pass, hotel reservations, amusement park ticker, and letters from my penpal in italy, in a UPS package for storage, not to send should I put these in my carry on? or my checked? there's some things in there i can't print twice or get again.

Keep all your papers with you in your carry on or on your person. Tickets, passport, reservation info, etc. Do not put in checked bags. You might consider a money belt or pouch worn under your shirt to keep these documents in.

You should also have copies of your passport, ATM card, credit card and leave these at the hotel so you have a record in case your passport, credit card, etc. is stolen.

Another valuable tip I got from this forum is to scan your documents and send them to your email address so you can access them any time if they are stolen.

i agree it is pretty big, but it was only $120, so i thought hey why not, I'll probably need it more than time this too

You might like your big bag now, but bet you won`t like it by the time you come home!

A few things to remember...

Don't pack your bag completely full, leave yourself both space and weight allowance (i.e. leave space inside, and if you're allowed 50 pounds, do not leave for your trip with it over 35-40 pounds). You'll accumulate stuff as you go.

Ziplocks and duct tape are your friends. Put anything that might leak in a ziplock and remember that they can do double duty for organizing in your bag. A small amount of duct tape can be very useful (I usually roll a length onto a chunk of cardboard).

If you can't go the first two or three days without it, it goes in your carry on (within restrictions of course). You don't have to carry all of your shampoo/body wash at the beginning, but it may be easier. Some people prefer to carry it, some prefer to buy it overseas. I usually put a toothbrush, toothpaste and mouthwash in my carry on and leave everything else in my main bag.

All important paperwork goes in your carry on. As others have mentioned, emailing your documents and scanned images of your passport to yourself at a web based email address is a good back up plan.

Remember to let your credit card company/bank know you'll be out of the country, if you're planning on using a card.
