Ludlow or Shrewsbury

I will have a free day in Chester after meetings. Would like to go to either Shrewsbury or Ludlow by train. Will only have 4-6 hours there before I must return to Chester. Which town would you recommend or prefer? Thanks

We spent a little time in Shrewsbury in 2007 because we're fans of Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael mysteries. We went to the Abbey where we had a good tour guide.

We stopped in Ludlow, but didn't get to spend as much time there.

Ludlow for me ,too. Especially for eating. Stokesay Castle outside of Ludlow is a real treat, a fortified manor house

I stayed in Shrewsbury and day tripped to Ludlow - very different towns - Ludlow much smaller - very compact and in a rather nice sylvan setting to me. For a limited time Ludlow i guess - it also has some very celebrated restaurants - some 2-star Michelin places i believe i read. But you could not go wrong with Shrewsbury either IMO - the great cathedral and the river running thru town, etc. Yet it is rather similar to Chester so for something different Ludlow i guess.
