Lucerne or Salzburg

Would you pick Lucerne or Salzburg given a choice of visiting one?

This is a very tough choice for me, since they are my two favorite cities in Europe.

Assuming you can't do both, I would think it boils down to whether:
1. You like bigger (Salzburg) vs smaller (Luzern) cities

2. Whether you want a bit faster paced (S) vs a "veg out on the water" (L) place;

3. Want more concert options (S;

I'd hate to have to choose, but my decision would rest on things like these.

Hi
We have been to both and they are both wonderful cities. I think there is more historical elements in Salzburg plus a "little sound of music" and great food. Lucerne is convenient to the Alps, lake cruise and shopping and truly lovely. You need to figure out what you like to see and do most then that will decide which one is the best choice.

Well, let me make the choice more difficult now. The trip will be in Dec. over Christmas. I definetly prefer the "smaller, quaint" places but if we do Salzburg it would include Halstatt.

I enjoy Salzburg in the summer, but think Lucerne would be a better choice for the time you are going as it is close to so much great snow scenery.

Both are great places, but my winter vote would be Lucerne. If summer I would have told you Salzburg.
