Must agree with pja1 and their recommendation of the Hotel zum Hechten in Fuessen. Wonderful accomodations and equally wonderful and helpful staff.

I was stationed in Bavaria for 7 years.
Garmisch and the surrounding area is a much more interesting than Fussen.

Thankyou all for your replies and help on this. It has certainly helped a lot, and I will stay at G-P. I decided to try to get an apartment to break up the hotel scene, and quite like this one: Ferienwohnung Jocher:

Has anyone stayed in these or other apartments, and is it a good option in Germany?

Given the distance and that I have a car I will see the castles on the way through to Bodensee. Really looking forward to staying at G-P and the wonderful day trips! Thanks very much!

Kids really enjoy time at the Rotobahn near Hohenschwangau. It is a bobsled type thing on the side of a hill. You can buy tickets to ride it numerous times. I am sorry I don't if there is a website for it. There was a tram ride up a mountain there, too. The kids couldn't get enough of the rotobahn. Good way to get rid of pent up teenage energy after sitting or touring museums and castles.

Found it. It is at Tegelbergbahn and is called a Rodelbahn. You can see it snaking down the hillside in the picture on the website.
