I was first there in 1970.... Did not go back until 2004 (very briefly) before this trip. I would say the landscape hasn't changed, and the trams and funiculars and elevator are still there, but there's a metro now. The Residencial Florescente had been going a bit more upmarket, and there are loads of places to eat, but still venerable cafes on the major squares. There seemed to be a lot more tourists there the last time I visited, and it wasn't high season, either.

Great report! We will be in Portugal for two weeks, one in Porto and one in Lisbon in May. Have gotten so many great tips from Fodor's Forums for our other trips. Did you have problems with the language in finding how to get to places?

No, no issues with language. I've had a fair amount of practice communicating in languages I don't speak, but lots of English in Portugal. (Lots of English expats, too, I believe.)
If you're going to Porto don't miss the port caves on the south bank of the river. I'd recommend Taylors.

Thanks so much for your great trip report. I'll be in Portugal later this spring for two weeks and have found much to take note of in it. I'd love to see your photos but the link doesn't work for me. Hope there might be another way to see them.
