My wife and I have stayed at Hotel Pas de Calais twice and have found it may be a place you should check out. It is right off blvd St Germain and near nice shops, retaurants, and near the St Germain metro stop. Rooms are "nice" from us "more mature" folks viewpoint and people at the desk are very accommodating. Breakfast is extra but typically European and a good start for each day.

I've never stayed in a dirty room in Paris (or anywhere that I can recall), but you and your friend might like the Hotel du Danube. A friend and I stayed in a superior twin and liked it.

Interesting choice of two locales: St. Germain and the 11th arrondissement. If you'd like to explore the latter, perhaps the Hotel Beaumarchais, 3 rue Oberkampf. hotelbaumarchais.com. That's the more sedate end of rue Oberkampf, still lively vis a vis St. Germain, with good restauarants nearby. The cutting edge is a short walk to the east.

Just came back two weeks ago. My husband and I stayed at the Best Western La Tour Notre Dame. It was great. It is in the 5th, about 150 euro a night, actually on Rue de Sommerard, but steps from the corner of Blvd St. Germain and Rue St. Jacques. EXCELLENT location and a really great facility. I know most people prefer the boutique hotels, but this was such a wonderful, updated place, I would defintely go there again. Hope this helps.

I am not offended I have find great rooms in all France, clean and great and also some rooms not clean. This is a fact of life for me. Actually there are rooms not clean all over the world and stars have nothing to do with it.

Another hotel to consider is Hotel de Notre Dame on Rue Maitre Albert (there are several "Notre Dame" hotels, so I mention the street for identification). Stayed there last in March. It's not part of any large chain and has a friendly and unobtrusive staff. Rooms and hallways are small, but interesting and clean. It's pretty much a do it yourself place; don't stay here if you're looking for bellhops and room service. Only breakfast is served. This location is just off Place Maubert (which has a taxi stand and metro stop) and just about 200 yards from the Seine opposite Notre Dame. A great location. Restaraunts, banks, street market, tourist shops are all within a short walk.

I am wondering why anyone would find the title to this post offensive. Aren't we all trying to avoid dirty lodging? A few years ago we stayed in the Hotel Beaune which was included in the Fodor's Charming Hotels guide. This was one of the foulest places we have every stayed. The owner's little dogs were using the lobby as a latrine; the bathtub did not drain; the room had dust everywhere--I could go on and on. We were very glad that we had only booked one night before we flew home.
