Looking for a place to listen to Fado in Lisbon?

Hi,
I would like to go to a bar/restaurant that has Fado performances.
Do you have any recommendations?
I would like to stay away from the "tourist traps" and the "restaurantes tipicos", as I am looking for a place that has more authentic performances.

Any recommendations?

obrigada!

Alexandra

Hello. I reccomend a quick look at my web page for further reading about Fado, as for places where to go, the suggestion I have there are :
Fado and dinning, Adega Machado, Norte street (21 322 46 40) + Adega Mesquita, Diario de Noticias street 107 (www.adegamesquita.com) + Café Luso, Travessa da Queimada 10 (21 342 22 81/2) + Clube do Fado, street S. João da Praça 92/94 near the Cathedral (S&eacute (www.clube-de-fado.com) + Grand'Tasca, Manuel Bernardes street nº 10 ABC (21 397 74 56)+ Sr. Vinho, Meio street in Lapa nº 18 www.restsrvinho.com + Taverna do Embuçado, beco dos Cortumes,10 (21 886 50 88) www.tavernadoembucado.com+ Timpanas,Gilberto Rola street nº 24 + Velho Pateo de Santana, Dr. Almeida Amaral street nº 6 (www.velhopateosantana.com)

Enjoy it,
Miguel

Hello Miguel,
Thank you for your response.
I'll check out your website.

I have another question:
I am thinking about staying at the Hotel Da Torre in Belem, ( my other choices near the Praca de Pombal or near the Olaias metro station).
My question is:
If I stay in Belem, will it be very expensive to take a taxi back to the hotel after going to a bar/restaurant to listen to Fado? Is it safe to take taxis or public transportation at night?
Is the Belem area near the monastery safe in the afternoon/evening?

Note: I am from Mexico City, where taking a taxi is not the safest alternative for transportation!

Thank you for your response

Alexandra

Hola Alexandra.

In Feb 2002 the taxi fare from Lisbon (near Eduardo VI Park) to Belem was the equivalent of 5USD. There is (at least during daylight hours) a large "hack stand" in Belem, where getting a cab is as easy as opening a door.

Hello all,
Thank you for all your info.
I am also glad to see that the taxi wouldn't be expensive from the Praca marques de Pombal to Belem. This was another one of my questions!

Hola Miguel,

If I could choose, I'd stay in the Belem area instead of Olaias. Chiado or Baixa are better alternatives than Olaias.

My favourite fado place in Lisbon is Parreirinha de Alfama. All taxi drivers are able to drive you there. If you go there, make sure you make reservation in advance (ask your hotel staff to do that for you)
