Well let me say that you have clarified the main point that people do use it and i know the area is being redeveloped (north side) so it's more useful than i thought - and DLR trains are perpetually mobbed it seems.

I do sympathize with the lift operator and was exaggerating my comments - i'm sure there are many signs saying no cycling in tunnel and yeh i too would make the bike bloke take the stairs though i think a warning first might be in order and maybe this was a repeat offender - so i'm with you on both.

And i love the tunnels so am in favor of operating them at whatever cost.

Because I live on the other side of the river but like going to the Picturehouse, pubs and cafes in Greenwich. From where I am it's almost quicker to walk through the tunnel than to use the DLR. And it's about the only exercise I get.

WOOLWICH FOOT TUNNEL
This tunnel, similar to the Greenwich one in every way, even seems less used than the Greenwich one as there seems to be little reason to cross the Thames either way here - seems nothing much on northside and there is also a car ferry that most pedestrians getting off the train/buses headed to - i was about the only one using the tunnel.

And Woolwich itself is a hardscrabble fading town after the loss of much of its naval installations. The main pedestrian street is pleasant enough but several stores it seems had going out of business signs on them - including Marks & Sparks. Very downscale tattered town.

But there is one heck of a great Fish & Chips shop on the main drag - an emporium as opposed to the claustrophobic mainly take out chippies i've seen. This is a spacious modern almost Americanesque restaurant serving very nice fish and chips - hopefully the fish did NOT come from the nearby Thames.

You can take trains from Woolwich back to Greenwich and London and you can take the DLR to a station near the tunnel entrance of the north side of the Thames.
