Have read good reports on this hotel in Budget Travel. Any comments? Does anyone know what the neighborhood is like? Any nearby restaurants, grocery, pubs, etc.?

Rather than getting several posts going, you can check on the status of a post by clicking on your screen name - this will bring up all the posts you contribute to. re the Travel Inn - a Travel Inn is a Travel Inn - they are all pretty much the same. The only real differences being the locations. This is certainly an OK neighborhood -- but it is pretty far from any tourist sites. You would have to depend on the District line to get most places - for many first timers the District line seems to confuse folks. I'd guess that is because it has spurs that go off in several directions. But if you get to know the line it is pretty straight forward.

If you can get in, the County Hall Travel Inn would be the one to book -- right in the very middle of London across from Big Ben and next door to the Eye.

Well - technically not exactly -- the first one didn't include "London". But anyone who knows anything about Putney Bridge would certainly know it is in London.

Putney isn't central, it might be cheap, but it's not a place tourists should consider staying if they want to see London. You'll soon lose your savings on the rate by increased transporation costs. Forget it, start again.

m_kingdom - you forget most of us mere mortals travel mostly by bus or tube. The Putney Br. Travel Inn is in zone 2 so the extra cost would really be minimal. However - the extra time needed to get places would be a problem.

The tube is vile, the other day I had an engagement in The City, I couldn't be bothered driving, it was lovely sunny weather, so I walked from Mayfair to my engagement. It took under and hour, and you see so much more when you're on foot.

But there's a big difference in the way a Londoner travels around London and the way a tourist travels around town. A Londoner would most likely have one destination in mind (work, the theatre, etc...) Walking or taking a taxi may well be the preferred method of travel.

But tourists generally have a whole day of getting around the city planned. Most tourists are on their feet from the time they leave their hotel in the morning until they collapse from exhaustion in the evening. Walking between all the sites in London is highly impractical. Public transportation is necessary, although I prefer the buses to the tube for the very reason that you see a lot more on a bus then underground on the tube.

Topping for Charmick & also to endorse Janis's suggestion of the County Hall Travel Inn.
