Ok, last question before I book this weekend. Is doing 4 nights in London and 4 nights in Bavaria a bridge too far? I know that doing 10 days would be ideal but I can only go for 8 nights unfortunately, but we really wanted to do London and Munich/Garmisch.

>>I can only go for 8 nights unfortunately,<<

If you have 8 nights total you won't have 4 days and 4 days.

If your total time off is 8 nights, one will be spent transatlantic, leaving you 7 nights in Europe. 7 nights will net you 6 days (plus half a jet lagged arrival day)

Another half+day traveling from London to Munich means you'll have 3 days in London and 2.5-ish days in Bavaria. Only you can decide if that is a pace you want.

No it is 8 nights. We leave Houston Friday July 13th at 8:30pm, land in London Saturday the 14th at 11:00am. We leave back to Houston Sunday July 22nd.

OK, so less than half a day on the 14th and then 7 full days - minus your travel day to Munich. So in effect usable 6 days for London and Bavaria/Munich. As I said - Only you can decide if that is a plan you can live with.

(Don't count on doing anything on the 14th. After formalities and transfers you likely check in at 2 or 3PM, in the middle of a 30+ hour travel day)

After much thought I may squeeze in another day (boss wont like it but oh well) and leave Houston that Thursday night giving us 9 nights in Europe. That would allow 4 nights in London and 5 nights in Munich/Garmisch. I feel like that extra day will be a big difference. That way we will land in Munich on the 17th around mid day, drive directly to Garmisch, stay 4 nights, then drive to Munich the morning that Saturday, spend the whole day in Munich then flight will leave out that following day. Unfortunately Munich will just be a pit stop but I feel that is better than trying to split too much time between Garmisch and Munich. Planning this trip seems harder than the invasion of Iraq in both Gulf Wars .

I make that three full days in London and three full days in Garmisch: You will find it much easier to visualize if you lay it out on a blank calendar page (print a freebie off the internet).

July 12 - in flight
July 13 - London afternoon with jetlag
July 14 - London
July 15 - London
July 16 - London
July 17 - fly to Munich, drive to Garmisch
July 18 - Garmisch
July 19 - Garmisch
July 20 - Garmisch
July 21 - drive to Munich
July 22 - fly to Houston

I would just stay in London and do day trips, but it's your vacation.

Thursday, yes that would be our exact schedule. Luckily the drive from Munich to Garmisch is only about an hour and fifteen minutes so not too bad. I assume when you say stay in London and do day trips that you mean just do day trips to various places in southern England?

A bit longer than that - from the airport its closer to 2 hours plus Schengen formalities plus arranging for the car - so count on 3 to 3.5 hours from landing
