London Shows

I will be in London on business later this month and have 2 days to myself. I expect that I will spend most of that time in the museums/galleries, but any other suggestions would be appreciated (I've been to the Tower of London, etc.). That said, can someone steer me to a website where I can review what shows are playing so that I can book a ticket? Also, is it necessary to buy theatre tickets ahead of time or are they easy to get (in January) at the half price booth (I seem to recall that there is one there). Thanks.

http://www.londontheatre.co.uk will list what's on.
Each day a good selection of shows will have tickets at the half price ticket booth, but not all shows will be available.
Another option, once you are in London, is simply to go to or to phone the box office of whatever theater you are interested in.

A nice feature of www.londontheatre.co.uk (the website that xxx already recommended) is that it has links to the newspaper reviews of most shows, if you want to know what the critics thought. Click on "Reviews" (on the left side of the home page, under "Index&quot, which will bring up a list of shows. Click on the name of the show you're interested in, then scroll down to the bottom of the page until you see "External links to full reviews from newspapers".

If you're interested in music (or in 18th century houses), you might enjoy the Handel House Museum, on Brook Street in Mayfair. It's the house where Handel lived for many years, restored as closely as possible to the way it was in Handel's time. When I visited it last summer, there were very few other visitors, which made a refreshing change from some of the more crowded museums. They occasionally put on concerts of (mostly) 18th century music -- you can check the schedule at the museum's website, www.handelhouse.org, to see if there will be any concerts there while you'll be in London.

The half price tix are located in Leicester Square (theater district). You should get there early in the morning because by the afternoon tickets are few and far between. I am pretty sure it is still playing but "We will Rock you". If you like the music of the rock band Queen you will love the show. I did. It was playing at the dominion theater on Tottenham court right next to the tube stop.

Am in London at the moment in an internet cafe...taking a break from the cold weather! Thought I'd drop in to see what's up on the boards.
Leicsester sq. has a half price ticket booth..then there area bunch of little half price booths all over the square.
If you are at a hotel with concierge service...put them to good use...just as easy and less hassle.
You should have no problems at at all
getting tickets to something you'd like to see.

Rose,

Go to www.solt.co.uk (Society of London Theatre), then click on the TKTS Ticket Booth tab, and see the link to what is selling today, as an example. You can't get the most popular shows, but you can get A LOT of different ones. I will be there later this month, and plan to get tickets to My Fair Lady and The Reduced Shakespeare Company's Abridged Shakespeare, both of which have been available pretty much ever day according to the website.

You can also get Chicago, Les Mis, and about 20 others. (Some examples of those it DOESN'T sell include Bombay Dreams, Mamma Mia, The Mousetrap, and The Lion King.

Good luck and have fun!

Just a word of caution. Those other "half price ticket booths" scattered in the Leicester Square area -- rather than the bigger independent building in the park itself-- are mostly rather shady.
They will often sell you tickets for 18 pounds for example to a show telling you that tickets to that show are normally 36 pounds, when in fact the tickets they sell you are at full price -- only the best seats to that show go for 36 pounds and the theatre itself sells the tickets you got for 18 or perhaps even less.
At the official booth, the independent building, most of the seats sold are the best or top priced seats in the theatre and are sold at half-price (although now they have some shows they sell at lesser discounts, but will tell you that). It is the only really reputable place to get half price tickets generally.

I second Ron's opinion. I thought "We Will Rock You" was great!

If you enjoy classical music then check out www.barbican.org.uk/home.asp. We heard the Royal Symphony Orchestra there on New Years Eve - wonderful performance.
