London restaurant with Good food & Good views
Does anyone know of a good restaurant in London with decent prices ($12ish for an entree & soft drink) and nice views of the city of London and Thames? I'll have a 13 year old boy with me. I thought OXO Brasserie might be good, but I haven't gotten any positive feedback on the prices.

hey jamila,

try the cafe *upstairs* at the new tate modern museum on the south bank.

they don't take reservations, and you'll have to stand in line, but the view over st paul's & the city is outstanding.

i saw the other oxo tower thread - not only was it expensive, it has also now closed . . . so don't make a beeline there!
hth & have fun.
= )

Jamila

Apart from tracy's suggestion I think you'll have a hard time finding a restaurant at that price WITH a view. London doesn't have a lot of restaurants perched on the top of tall buildings (and if they are they tend to be expensive), so the best views you are going to get are from restaurants overlooking the Thames.

There are a few Conran restaurants with great views over the Thames, the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. They have outside tables if you'll be here in warmer weather. The cheapest is The Butlers Wharf Chop House who have a set menu - 2 courses for £9. Soft drinks are usually about £1.50. Although this is in their bar area so not sure if the 13 year old would be allowed. The site is http://www.conran.com/eat/

If you want restaurants for under £10 in general then let me know and I'll recommend some for you.
The Dickens Pub at St. Katherine's Wharf behind the Tower of London has a pizza restaurant on the second level and a more expensive restaurant on the third level. You look out over a marina where various boats are docked. It is a very pleasant place.

Jamilla: The upstairs restaurant at the Tate will likely be more expensive than your $12 limit. The downstairs cafe doesn't have as good a view but lower prices.

The less formal of the 2 cafes at the Globe theatre has great views of the river (both have the view but the POSHer place will be over your price range)

The top floor restaurant at the Nat'l Portrait Gallery has interesting views over the rooftops of London and down Whitehall to Big Ben, etc.

Tracy: Has the entire OXO Tower closed or just the brasserie? I will be in London next month and had planned to take friends to the OXO for drinks.

If you go to Butler's Wharf be sure to eat in the bar area. When we were there in April we saw the signboard for the bar prices but went into the main dining area--it is much, much more expensive. We paid over $70 for lunch for two without alcohol. BUT--it was delicious and we enjoyed every minute of it.
