You do not want to stay out near Heathrow if you are visiting London. It takes about 1 hour via tube to get into London which eats up alot of sightseeing time. If you are just overnighting there are alot of airport hotels - be aware that most do not provide free shuttle service as U.S. airport hotels do. There is a bus called Hoppa Bus that charges several pounds per person per ride to go the hotels and then back to the a/p. Taxi's to most of the a/p hotels are about 8 pounds.
Check the Sheraton websites, they have two hotels at Heathrow and last time I looked rates were not too bad. I know alot of people go with Priceline but unless you really understand the process I'd stay away from it.

If you need easy access to the airport (and don't mind paying £13 for the ride), there are any number of hotels in the Paddington neighborhood, such as the Westpoint or Abbey Court in Sussex Gardens. It's a five-minute walk to the station, and the Heathrow Express will whisk you to Terminal 1-2-3 in 15 minutes or Terminal 4 in 20. Here's an area map:

I had planned to stay at the Crompton Guest House, a short walk from the Hounslow Central tube station, which is only a 1.80L tube ride from Heathrow. Since my husband was hospitalized in Cairo and we flew home on MedJet; I never stayed there, for my planned final night before returning home. Their rate is 65L and I am recommending them, as they worked with me in not charging for the room, when I cancelled after their deadline. They seemed very nice. You can google their name and if you stay there, please tell them that I had posted this message.
