My family and I are going to London for the first time in October, and we are looking for a good deal on a hotel in central London. Does such a thing exist?

You mentioned "your family". Keep in mind that a double room in London means just that - for two. If you want accommodation for more than two, you generally will either have to get another room or book a special room specifically for the number in your party.

With that caveat in mind, Priceline can be a very good deal (if you get two rooms).

We stayed at the Morgan Hotel near the British musuem (in Bloomsbury near Soho). I think it was around $100/night for a double room in 2000. It came with breakfast, cable tv and a nice sized bathroom.

Just looking at laterooms.com I noticed apartments in Queensgate, Kensington, that would be ideal for a family; not expensive and great location.

I second County Hall Travel Inn. 10 steps away from the London Eye on South Bank.

I also would recommend you contact properties directly, by fax, phone or email. More and more properties are offering "guaranteed lowest rates" by contacting them directly.

Our family of four ( incld. two teenagers) just returned from London. We stayed at the Euston Plaza Hotel, which looks like it has just been attractively remodeled and is conveniently located 1 block from the Euston Tube and Bus Station. Our very large room included a king size bed and two twins and a really nice breakfast. Our rate was GBP179 which may seem high, but that still beat the cost of having to get two rooms, or trying to squeeze into one room with two queensize beds. I have a 16 yr old son and an 18 yr old daughter, so three beds was a must. I booked through LondonNights.com which is a NO FEE service.
