Lodging in/near Old Town Edinburgh and 8 day itinerary

Looking for a moderate place in Old Town for 2 days, early May. Then will get car to go on for 7-8 days. Suggestions for itinerary? Where should be head after Edinburgh and can we wind up in Glasgow.
We want to do some whisky touring, Oban, heard Iona was special. Not too much hiking, but one or two nice manor houses to be pampered and scenery. thanks for your help

You might look at the Ibis (part of the Accor chain.)

"To the top" - a method of getting the thread bumped to the top of the heap for others to see.

Oh! that's exactly what I hoped would happen! Does anyone know about car rentals? My husband thinks he read that if you rent with a certain card ( master card Gold??) it willl cover the deductible on the insurance. Also, suggestions on company to rent with in Edinburgh and drop off. We don't want a car in Edinburgh but will want one for rest of stay and then drop off at airport when we leave .\Thanks.

For a reasonably priced hotel I also recommend the Ibis. I haven't stayed in the Edinburgh one (although some of my family have), but I've stayed in others & the rooms although simple have always been decently equipped & very clean. It couldn't be more convenient for the main sights, being right next to the Royal Mile. The full address for the Edinburgh one is http://www.ibishotel.com/ibis/ficheh...he_hotel.shtml and it's currently showing at £64.95 per room per night for May.

Are you flying into Edinburgh & out of Glasgow, in which case you'd presumably need a one-way car hire ? Picking up in central Edinburgh & dropping off at Glasgow airport ? Are you planning to stay a night or two in Glasgow ?

Actually Ibis was booked when I inquired so I've book the Travel Lodge on Mary St? just for the location and because I thought we'd be spending most time out of the hotel in Edinburgh and would save up for a manor house or castle stay elsewheres where we would be spenidng more time on grounds, relaxing, painting, etc.
Sheila was nice enough to respond to an email with good suggestions for along the Spey [Muckrach Lodge Hotel just outside Grantown on Spey. It
overlooks the Cairngorms., there are masses of good places to walk and you
could visit a few distilleries, Elgin (buy cashmere) Culloden, a couple of
castles, Clava Cairns, Culloden and chill a bit.]
and near Oban [Pierhouse or at the Isle of Eriska. From there you can do Oban, and Iona.
I think you'd be pushing it to do Skye too.]
If we really wanted to get to Skye what should we drop or in what order from Edinburgh should we go? Up to Oban area, then Skye then Along the Spye?? Can we do all this?:
We will arrive Edinburgh May 5leave on 7th and then returning to leave morning of the 15th (from Edinburgh). Also wanted to get in Glasgow at end but could skip in favor of the country side.
Can we drive from Edinburgh to Oban area in a day on back roads? Not feeling too smart about this but I'm learning thanks to suggestions.

We stayed at Ellesmere Guesthouse - a cute little B&B. The owners were very helpful with restaurant suggestions. I don't know if it is still there - but there are many nice B&B's in Edinburgh.

If you really want to go to Skye, then your route should be Edinburgh, Oban Skye, Speyside, Edinburgh, or in reverse; and reverse makes more sense if you want to finish up in Glasgow.

Sure, you can do it, but remember you're going to be spending the guts of a day in the car between each stop.

You can drive from Edinburgh to Oban in half a day
