Thank you so much. You've been a tremendous help as we've planned this trip. We actually just made a last minute change and are now going to stay in Wengen for 5 nights and skip Basel (we were going to do Wengen for 3 and Basel for 2, but it looks like there's more to do in the Wengen area....although it looks a little chilly in the forecast.) So we're ending up with 4 nights in Montreux, 5 nights in Wengen, 3 in Paris, and 1 in Geneva. We're really looking forward to it.

swandav beautifully describes how to walk out of the train station. it sounds complicated but will make sense once you're there. Nothing's too far in Montreux, but it's all twists and turns, paved main street, cobblestone alleys, pedestrian staircases, etc.
With a family, rolling luggage along, off an overnight flight, and afer the train ride out from Geneva, honestly I'd also spring for a taxi. they'll be waiting right there and it's a short distance.
