Lockers in stations - Capri & Pompeii

I have posted this before and tried to do a search on related topics, but 'nothing in cyberspace'... It's disappeared... Will be travelling to Sorrento from just out of Rome, and want to see Pompeii on the way from Napales. Does anyone know if there is a locker at the Pompeii train station, and also when we leave Sorrento, thought we'd take the ferry to Capri and hopefully leave our luggage at the ferry station (?) for a couple of hours there, whilst we peruse the island, before taking the ferry to Naples to continue on to Tuscany. Has anyone done this, or know if it can be done... With thanks...

I hope that somebody out there may come up with an answer, Debbie. If you don't get an answer, you may inquire your hotel in Sorrento.

Meanwhile, there's a couple of points you should consider. The Circumvesuviana train trip between Pompeii Scavi and Sorrento takes only 25 minutes. IMO it wouldn't be such a bad deal going directly from Naples to your hotel in Sorrento, and go about visiting Pompeii after check in (or the next day). You would "loose" not much more than one hour compared to visiting Pompeii on route to Sorrento. If you add the nuisance to get the luggage down from the train, to check it in at a concierge or locker (if one is available), to check it out and up in the train once again, the "time" price you'd be paying is very low.

Once in Sorrento, you may get a hold on the locker situation in Capri and play it by ear. If there is a convenient service (I would guess there is) you may follow your plan to take an hydrofoil to Capri from Sorrento and then get another one into Naples. But if you're continuing by train to Tuscany, I would strongly consider going back to Sorrento and catch the Circuvesuviana train back to Naples. The hydrofoil trip from Capri to Sorrento is much faster than from Capri to Naples. Once in Naples port you'd still not be out of the woods. A taxi would be necessary to get you to the train station. Luggage from hotel to the hydrofoil; check in and check out in Capri; from the hydrofoil to a taxi; from the taxi to the train ... Unless there aren't convenient hydrofoils back to Sorrento (frequencies go down after summer season) I would probably keep it simple and leave the luggage at the hotel in Sorrento. Go back and forth to Capri and get it over with the train from Sorrento to Naples (1 hour and up 2 floors in Napoli centrale station).

Paulo
Debbie, I did not see any lockers in the Pompeii Scavi Station, it was a really tiny station, more like a train shelter. There are however lockers at the train station in Napoli, where we stored our bags while we toured Pompeii. It was an older type of bag storage, where all the bags are checked in and placed in a big warehouse. (As opposed to do-it yourself lockers). As I recall it was not that expensive and we were there in 1999. In terms of lockers at ferry stations, we took the ferry to Ischia and again I did not see any lockers at the ferry station, but I admit I was not looking for them at the time. Good Luck you will love Pompeii, make sure you hire a guide it will make all the difference.

Debbie: Yes, your original message did vanish along with my answer on your 1st post.
At the Pompeii site just to the right of the ticket *collecting* booth there is an open unattended room where you can leave your luggage for free. For piece of mind while visiting the site you might want to secure the 2 bags together somehow (bicycle cable lock, small chain dog-collar & small luggage lock, even a heavy ty-wrap). A thief would have to be quick and not attract attention. The ticket collecting booth is inside the site past the ticket selling booth, bookstore and *police* substation. Walking out with 2 attached bulky roll-a-boards would attract attention and they would just grab someone elses'. Although I've never heard of anyone being robbed from there on any NG/forum.
Capri: This is from the "Let's Go Italy 2000". "Luggage Storage: Caremar ticket office (tel. 081 837 07 00) at Marina Grande Capri's funicular. Open daily 8am-9pm, in winter 8am-6pm. L3000 per bag. Another office in Anacapri's P. Vittoria. Open daily in summer 8am-5:30pm. L2000 per bag. HTH Regards, Walter
Thank you all so much again for your information. We will be in Sorrento 23/24 th October, so hopefully it won't be too busy. Does anyone know approx how long the ferry takes to get from Capri to Naples, and approx what the cost would be? What about getting a taxi from the port of Naples to the train station, would that be very expensive or take very long? Thanks again for your input... DLC...

Hi, Debbie

We went to Capri from Naples last May. We took a hydrofoil for 45 min (if my memory is right) but next time i will opt for a ferry with open deck coz i got seasick with the hydrofoil. We took a bus from the train station and got off then cross the street then it is the port. You could also take a tram downstairs in the train station. Naples has 2 ports.
I hope this helps.
ofelia
