Lock or not to lock checked baggage?

I know that they have the right to cut my lock and search my belongings. I still lock my suitcase just so I know whether or not my bag was searched. It's piece of mind for me. If the lock has been cut off something might be missing and I can file a claim. Do you really trust that the security workers aren't going to steal something? I don't. But then I don't put anything valuable in my checked luggage. However, I've had friends have sneakers, sweatshirts, etc. stolen out of their suitcases. I think the airlines are going to have a lot of missing items claims, whether real or just because people can get away with it.
