liverpool, where to stay?
On my next trip to London in less than 2 weeks I'll be making a quick side trip to Liverpool to see an exhibit with 3 friends. We're driving in (thanks to an adventurous Brit friend who is willing to drive 300 miles!) and I'd like to know if there is a nice safe centrally located place to stay for the night. We don't want to splurge but want safe and clean. Any recommendations?
If no one has any in town recommendations we'd certainly consider a more rural place to stay that isn't too far off the London road...
thanks for any help.

thanks for the info. I'm not at all familiar with Liverpool. The museum I'm visiting is near the train station on Lime st. Do you think it's safe to walk in the area? I think it'll be dark when we leave the museum in January. We're travelling with 2 women 2 men...

This hotel will be a bit of a walk to the museum. It's lcated on the banks of the River Mersey. I don't think you will have any problems walking at night, but a Taxi may be the better option if you decide to stay at the CP.
The major crime problem in Liverpool is car break-ins. Do not leave anything in plain view. If you will drive to the museum, park at a lot or in a well lit, busy area.
BTW, what museum are you talking about?
Just to give you an idea of what's fairly close to the hotel:
Albert Dock (0.5 KM/ 0.31 MI )
Aintree Racecourse (5 KM/ 3.11 MI )
The Beatles Story (0.5 KM/ 0.31 MI )
HM Custom & Excise Museum (0.5 KM/ 0.31 MI )
Everton Football Club (4 KM/ 2.49 MI )
Liverpool Football Club (4 KM/ 2.49 MI )
Liverpool Cathedral (1 KM/ 0.62 MI )
Merseyside Maritime Museum (0.5 KM/ 0.31 MI )
Museum of Liverpool life (0.5 KM/ 0.31 MI )
Tate Gallery Liverpool (0.5 KM/ 0.31 MI )
I also LOVE the new Marriott by the airport. The hotel was converted from an old terminal building. In your case it would not be a good location.

When I was in Liverpool in October 2003, I stayed at the Travelodge Liverpool Central on Old Haymarket, about a 5 minute walk from Liverpool Lime Street station and the Walker Gallery. Room price around £50 per night. This is one of those chains of no services hotels like the Travel Inn, but it is a modern building with comfortable decent-sized rooms. The area seemed totally safe to me.

thanks for the advice on hotel ideas. We're debating staying in the city or trying to find a countryside B&B heading back out of town.
Thanks for the advice about car breakins- if we stay at the hotel we'll probably try to check in first- park there and walk to the Walker.

Hi,there is also a Premierlodge hotel on the Albert Dock (in one of the nice old renevated warehouse buildings) in the same area as the Crowne Plaza. Not sure if they take bookings for single nights though.
www.premierlodge.co.uk
For a quiet location you could cross the river Mersey into Wirral. There is a lovely hotel I would recommend in a pretty little village called Thornton Hough. The hotel is next to a village green and has a cosy little pub close by. There is an even cosier traditional pub (around 16th century)that you would pass on the way to the hotel with low ceilings and thatched roof. One of my favourites!
The hotel is normally quite expensive, but it has some good winter offers on now.
It would be about 15-20 minutes drive from Liverpool, but although in a rural area the motorway connection would be only about 5 minutes drive away.

If you decide to stay in Liverpool, I'll see if I can find some Liverpool hotel discount website addresses I've got (somewhere)

We stayed at the Britannia Adelphi.
City Center, close to pedestrian and nightlife zone. Fitness room in the hotel.
A bit of a Titanic atmosphere. Lovely piece of 19th century architecture, huge enormous building, but very charming.

baldrick, I'm glad you had a good experience at the Adelphi Hotel as I'd heard some bad stories about it.
A few months ago I was looking into booking my daughter and her friend into a Liverpool hotel for a night and came across a hotel site that gave really bad reviews for the Adelphi.
Quite a few said the rooms hadn't been cleaned, beds not changed and old trays of food left in the room.
A couple of years ago in the UK there was a tv series made about the hotel. Very entertaining and turned some of the staff into cult figures, talked about all over the country!
Although it showed all the problems in the hotel and certainly portrayed the rudeness of some of the staff, I believe the bookings went through the roof after the series was shown!
A bit like Easyjet being brave enough to have a tv series here showing all the disgruntled passengers every week - I'm always amazed the programme hasn't put them out of business

angel UK,
The stories are true. Couple of years ago I booked 2 nights after seeing the show on BBC America. WHAT A BIG MISTAKE!
I show up at around 1pm, true, not the official time to check-in, but it's not 8am either. Anyway, I'm told no check-in till 3pm, so be it. I leave my luggage and go out to have a lunch and a beer. Come back at 3 and still no room. Visit their pub, actually nice, have 1 or 2 more beers and go back. YES, I'm told the room is ready. I get the key, take the elevator, walk about 1/2 mile(I'm not kidding) and my room door is open???. I walk in and to my surprise the room looks like it has just been vacated. Bed sheets all over the room, washroom full of towels on the floor, etc... So, I drag my suitcase back to the elevator, down, and now have to wait in line. Finally it's my turn, I explained what's going on. I was given a "weak" apology at best and after about 10 minutes another key. There I go again. Up the elevator, this time maybe a 1/4 mil;e walk, open the door...... and guess what????????? SAME S**T!!!!!!!!.
That's it, I get back to the front desk, tell them I'm Out of here. That's when I found the Crown Plaza on the river. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!!!
I was a big fan of the show, and that's why I booked a room there. This place is a dump to begin with, and the mngt. has no idea what running a hotel is all about.
Britania Adelphi in Liverpool will NOT be on any and I mean any list as far as I'm concerned. The rooms were disgusting to begin with, and I'm not talking about them not being cleaned.
STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!

AAFrequentFlyer - your experience sounds like it could have been straight from the tv series! Glad you found the Crowne Plaza instead of putting up with it.
Next time you're in town all of the other hotels I mentioned are decent and in the area of the Crowne Plaza (except the hotel in Wirral obviously - depends if you want loads of nightlife or not).
Hope they do a re-run of that series soon
