I will be heading to Malta in late April 2008. I will be buying a few books to get the major stuff, but wanted to see if anyone had experience with the lesser known hotels, dive shops(scuba), activities, restaurants that a person might want to check out. We should be there for about 3 days

Malta is so tiny I doubt there is much that remains undiscovered. With 3 days you will want to concentrate on the highlights--the amazing neolithic temples (I recommend the Archaeological museum in Valletta as well), Mdina, the Hypogeum (reservation required), and the many natural sights of Gozo. I liked the Rough Guide. VisitMalta.com was also helpful.

We did a jeep safari on Gozo. It was a great way to see the island.

Closer to the time let me know what kind of restaurants you like and i will let you have my tuppence worth. We live on the island and I must say that we have an excellent selection of eateries to fit all tastes and pockets. You will have no problem filling the three days and your tummy...can't you extend your stay at all? Yorkshire is right, Malta is small but still worth more than three days after making the effort to get here.

Thanks so much for the offer. Since you live on the Island, I wanted to ask you what a person could expect from the weather in Mid-April. I have checked websites but get awfully different answers so I am not sure which one to believe. Of course, I won't hold you to any sort of comment on the weath .

And about extending, I wish we could. We have 14 days and I am trying to introduce my wife to be to some of the places I have traveled to (cinque Terre, Tuscany) and then visit a new place, Malta.

Apologies for my late reply. In April the weather can vary but nothing drastic. This past April we had no rain whatsoever, great for the tourists , not so much for our agricultural needs. I do not enjoy the heat of the summer so April is a great month for me, sunny and mild, with the smallest nip in the night time air if a breeze is blowing. Also the island is still green ( or as green as it gets) after the winter...in fact i think it looks its best at this time with the first indications of spring!Whenever i have visitors one of the first places i take them to is the audio visual show called "The Malta Experience' at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta. It gives one a great amount of information in an interesting way after which one can decide which aspects of the island one wants to explore.

We will be traveling to Malta at the end of June 2008 (graduation present for our son). My husband and son are avid golfers and I am wondering if there is golf available on the island....whether it justifies them bringing their clubs. We will be staying at Solana Hotel....any comments appreciated.

If you or your wife would like to read a superb piece of fiction set in Malta and Gozo I encourage you to read Disorderly Knights by Dorothy Dunnett. It is the third volume of the Lymond Chronicles but can be read on its own as well.

What would be the best guidebook to the islands?

AAA's Malta & Gozo Spiral Guides is excellent - available at any book store with an extensive travel section. E-bay or Amazon might also have. Malta is amazing - ENJOY!

Make sure you do not miss this great live show in Malta - Knights Spectacular 1565. We went in December and my family really loved it! My son cannot stop talking about it actually as he had the time of his life cheering and banging on the bench. It is actually a dinner show with about 50 performers and eight horses. An action packed show, definitely a unique attraction and a complete and highly entertaining night out while in Malta. Do not miss it! It is performed every Thursdays in a newly built covered arena in Hal-Farrug, close to Siggiewi, but do not worry about the whereabouts... transportation is also included!!!

If the Labour Party is still running their restaurant on Republik Street, I definitely recommend the lasagne.
