Hello,
The legal drinking age in Spain is 18, but if parents order wine/sangria/beer in restaurants no i.d. will be asked, even if kids are at the table. So you shouldn't have to worry.
I have been living here my whole life and I have had wine with my parents for lunch since I was 15. I have never found a problem or a comment from anyone.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I am an American and did not see the harm in giving a kid a sip. (See above) And I don't drink.
And the OP was trying to be polite and undeerstand the customs and laws of a country she is visiting. I guess that is a problem too. Usually Americans are accused of being loud and disrespectful of local customs and traditions. I guess you want it both ways.
AND it is the Spanish government who is now imposing absurd fines on Spanish merchants who violate the law.

Children really should not be drinking alcohol and don't need to take "sips" to taste it. It isn't good for them, their bodies aren't as able to handle it as adults. And all the stuff about how it is good to teach kids to drink at a very young age is not true, public health studies have shown that.

I would be shocked if anyone questioned your 15 year old even if she ordered the drink herself. (unless she looks 12 or something like that).
I really don't think it is going to be a big deal. Europe doesn't have the same hang ups as the US does about alcohol.

Wow. Didn't realize my question would create such a lengthy discussion.
Well, we're back home now. First, the issue of my daughter taking a sip from our drinks; then, the distasteful issue of the sangria,

We did give her a sip here and there, discreetly, and it was not an issue. At a couple of places, the waiters actually looked a little surprised that she didn't an alcoholic drink with my husband and me, and I think that's because she's tall and looks older than 15.
I did notice in Granada, more than anywhere else, signs posted about not serving minors under 18. We did not share a sip with her at these places because of that. Figured if they're concerned enough to post a sign, we'll respect that..
As for the sangria - we had it the first two nights, then figured out the locals were drinking beer and straight wine, and only tourists like us were having sangria....
And we also discovered tinto verano - which we liked much better than the sangria. We did get a bottled tinto verano in Nerja, in a nice, upscale place, too (El Refugio) and it was awful. The best tinto verano we had though was also in Nerja, at a place called Julie's (cuban tapas). My husband looked it up and it seems to be red wine mixed with sparkling water and lemon juice. We're normally just red wine drinkers (and the house wines, I think mostly from Rioja, at all the restaurants we ordered them at, were good) but the cold tinto veranos were a nice change in the heat.
And yes, I asked this question because the U.S. is, in my opinion, way too uptight about the issue of drinking alcohol, in general, and I suspected the Spanish were not but didn't know for sure... Honestly, in my opinion, again, the American attitude seems to do more harm than good. I'm not surprised that the first time someone saw sloppy drunk people, it was young Americans. Embarrassed for my own countrymen, but not surprised. When it comes to drinking, nudity, and sex, we're big prudes, so that when we do indulge, it's like letting a toddler run free in a candy shop. Many of us were simply never taught how to be moderate drinkers.
My husband and I personally feel that, given that our daughter is probably going to want to have a drink socially when she's older, she should learn how to drink moderately. And learn that it's not about getting drunk, but enjoying the drink itself with food and friends.... For what it's worth, she doesn't care for most red wines yet, or beer. She did like the sangria, though.

BumbleB6 I agree with you, given the drink to your daughter it was the best thing you did, because a bit of alcohol and drink socially is fine and we should learn our children how to drink moderately.
By the way, the police close down some casetas at the Feria Malaga because of selling alcohol to minors.
