Leaving Portovenere - ferry or bus??

We have booked the Grand Hotel Portovenere (any feedback??)for a couple of nights in June. When we leave there we are going to catch a train to Avignon. Is it better to catch a ferry/bus to one of the five towns to get the train or should we head to La Spezia and catch the train from there? thanks for any help. Cathie

Bus to La Spezia for the train. I suspect with a change in Genoa and maybe Nice. We love Portovenere---been there 4 times. The hotel is a fabulous location but has lost a bit of prestige in recent years--still the best in town.

Hi Bob, I'm getting down to basics now, but do you happen to know how long the trip takes and how often the buses leave? I'm going to book train tickets (closer to the time) and don't want to be late. thanks

The buses run from Portovenere about every half hour and the journey takes about half an hour.
The full schedule is on www.atclaspezia.it - it's route 11/P - but it would be easier to check it when you get there. Most do not stop at the railway station, so you'd need to check the location of the nearest stop.
You need to buy bus tickets before boarding the bus, as in most Italian towns; newspaper kiosks and tobacconists usually sell them.
If you have a lot of luggage, a taxi might be easier.
The boat services are on www.navigazionegolfodeipoeti.it but these are tourist trips rather than a regular ferry service, and may be cancelled if the sea conditions are bad.

Geoff is right. Why not just pop for a taxi to take you right to the station---about :20 by car.

Thanks Geoff and Bob, I'm really grateful for the advice. After reading your comments we have changed our plans and have booked Villa Marherita in Levanto. It is on the train line and we don't have nearly enough time in Cinque Terre so we want to be able to enjoy every moment. If you think I've made a mistake, please tell me. The taxi idea made a lot of sense though. thanks again, Cathie
