I can certainly recommend the Bistro, which is much more attractive than the photos. We have eaten at Restaurant La Meynardie for 12 years, and at the Bistro, the owners' new operation, since it opened last November. We've sent many guests there, who have enjoyed it immensely.

Crazyweb - are you connected with the restaurant? We know Mme Lasserre at Paulin, and Christophe at the Bistro.

A group of 6 of us had lunch at the Bistro a few weeks ago; it is a pleasant place and I will include it in my ongoing trip report.

We're planning on being in Sarlat in April, so I'm looking forward to hearing/reading about it, eks. I'm pretty much of a city person, so we may make Sarlat our base in order to have more things to do, dining choices, etc. Does this make sense for a brief visit?

And thanks to crazyweb and Carlux for the recommendation. I need something to look forward to in order to get through the long winter.

A restaurant recommendation is a good thing, and I will certainly note this one, but this post looks very like an advertizment. I thought that was a no-no on this thread.

Thanks. I will arrive at Sarlat soon in my report. It is a spectacularly handsome town but with a few exceptions, the eating is better elsewhere, in my limited experience. With a few days only, I would base here (we stayed 3 nights at the Hotel Madeleine a few years back; with a longer length of stay I would base in the countryside, as we did on this most recent visit. Driving is simple; driving in and out of Sarlat presents no problems even to a nervous driver like myself, at least in the off-season when we were there. I thought the areas in or close to Carlux, Carsac, and Cenac, offered a great combination of scenic beauty and location central to the sites and accessible to the autoroute. Sarlat is very close to all of these, of course. I hesitate to offer even this much advice as there are posters so much more experienced than I am regarding this region so keep this in mind....

In any case, this is among the loveliest and least spoiled regions of western Europe and I would not hesitate to return for a third visit in the not-too-distant future.

eks,
I've been enjoying your report and Moolyn's as well. Haven't commented or asked questions because my trip will have to be on hyperspeed--as usual. If I can squeeze in a few good meals among my hardcore sightseeing, I'll be happy.

Yes, I must agree that while my post was a recommendation, the original seems to be advertising.

It is beef from the Limousin region, north of the Dordogne!

an old post, i know... will be in the area at end of May, and wonder if there are updates?

Is Bistro de l"octroi still recommended by area (local and visitor) Fodorites?

Any others you'd recommend? Le Rossignol? We'll be staying in the old ville, on Rue du Presidial.

Lots of comments on restaurants in this recent thread
http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...ted-svp.cfm?41
The Octroi is rather variable - very good some days, not so much on others.
The Rossignol is still very dependable. Good food in a rather boring room.
