There is a parking garage right next to the train station Lauterbrunnen. So if you decide to stay in Wengen, a lovely small village, you would have a place to stash your car.

Also please remember, as I'm sure you will learn, the COOPS close in the middle of the day for a couple hours and promptly at 5pm. Just when you think are hungry and decide to hunt one down for some food, sure enough it will be closed. Ask me how I know!!! Plan ahead a bit and you will be fine. It is an absolutely stunning area.

Chocolate milk cows (brown and white) dot the hills with their bells clink clink clinking. One cow walked up behind me on a trail and I didn't know it (they are quiet when they want to be I guess! )but my husband saw it and didn't tell me. My husband called to me to turn around. I swung around and was face to face with a cow. I jumped back about three feet, scared the cow and he trotted off down the hill. I must say they are quite larger up close than I imagined.

You will have memories to last a lifetime!

I appreciated the convenience of Lauterbrunnen. When I was there (mid June), it was spectacularly sunny and the magnificent Staubbach Falls were very full with spring run-off.

And agree that the Oberland is a good choice for dinners.

Pal,

First, I cannot believe you have had my comment deleted -- my comment only gave a different view from yours and had no derogatory language (as yours have had in the past).

Secondly, I think you didn't read my comment very well. I said at one point (which I cannot prove now, however) that "Wengen is smaller, so it has fewer people and fewer bars and restaurants."

I never, ever (NEVER EVER) said that Wengen and Grindelwald were equally "hopping." My only point, which is quite true, is that there are young folks in Wengen; it is NOT a den for older folks. Many of the guides and instructors are based in Wengen, and they do party at night.

And of course I do do my good research. In person. You have admitted that you haven't ever been in Wengen after dark. I encourage you to do so.

swandav2000 - I did NOT have your comment or mine deleted - I would never do that - I was as surprised as you that our comments were deleted but in reflecting I can see why - so you make an unwarranted bogus charge!

enough said about Wengen - I would never stay in such a quiet place - each to their own - I like a more real city like charming Interlaken!

Cheers and let's stop the frackus and again I would never and never have had anyone's remarks deleted and can't fathom why you think I would.

Peace?

lol. Really happy to know it wasn't you!

You and I have a long-standing relationship on this board; we agree on most points but disagree on a few. I'm happy we can continue our interesting cyber relationship!

my only thought was Lauterbrunnen might be a more convenient transportation base>

yes but the train only take 15 minutes to trundle up to Wengen and from Wengen if going to Jungfraujoch it is on the way and you have cableways from Wengen to Mannlichen and from there down to Grindelwald - a neat way to go rather than by more mundane trains.

swandav2000 - now we are on the same page! Thanks.

>I would never stay in such a quiet place<

ROFL!

As if tiny, tiny Lauterbrunnen with its Coop market the size of my sitting room were some metropolis.

You have to live out in the sticks if you think Lauterbrunnen is any more substantial than a golf course surround by some condos.

The same with Gimmelwald--some houses and potting sheds on a hill. You get almost the exact view as from Murren.

Rick Steves exaggerates the charms of Gimmelwald because he is selling books.

Hyperbole outsells honesty.

If there are not younger people in Wengen, why is there a playground across the road from the Schönegg?

Who are all those snappers at the public swimming pool in Wengen?

Why are there tennis courts on the main street in Wengen?

Wengen attracts families who obviously use those accoutrements meant for kids - not the apres-ski or hike crowd. and again it's not that there are not folks of all ages in Wengen - the main point of moi is that the younger singles 20s types will find much more to their liking in Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen - I think this debate has played out.

Who are all those snappers at the public swimming pool in Wengen?>

Jogged my mind - when walking down from Kl Scheideg to Wengen when coming into town I think I recall seeing a swimming pool and tennis courts with young folk in them - again a great place for families (and people of all ages) - I would stay in Wengen but I don't think I could find something for my starvation budget there - one reason now I stick to Interlaken - amongst many reasons, transport links for far-flung day trips I do one of the key ones.

But I've actually walked around Wengen several times and it is a sweet place to stay don't get me wrong!
