Late night arrival Rome airport; inexpensive hotel/shuttle/
We will be arriving at Fiumicino Airport in Rome at 10:30pm on Saturday, March 27, 2010 after a very long, tiring journey. We wish to find a hotel near the airport that might provide a shuttle service so that we can get some sleep before we travel to Rome's historic district, refreshed, the following morning. We will be renting an apartment for the rest of our stay
There seems to be a problem with transportation this late at night. Hotels such as the Hotel Alante (near the Vatican) provide complimentary transporation from the airport, but, not at this late hour. Does anyone have any budget-friendly suggestions for this one night stay with transportation?

The last express train into Rome leaves at 11:30 so I'm not sure you would make that if you have to wait for luggage. You can take a taxi which is a set rate of 40€ for 4 people including luggage to any hotel in Rome.

Most of the limo services have a surcharge after 10pm so a taxi will probably be cheaper. There is also a hotel shuttle that drops at multiple hotels, but can take awhile since they have other people to drop. You might not want to fool with something like that late at night.

Ostia Antica Park Hotel is about 7 km away from the airport. While they have a shuttle, I don't think it runs that late. A taxi can take you there. It is a very clean and modern hotel, but with few amenities that they do not charge for.
In the morning you could take a cab to the Ostia train station and take that into the city. You did not say where you were staying.

You know, my husband and I were just remembering how much we appreciated springing for the taxi from Fiumicino into Rome, rather than our usual use of public transport.
Can you arrange to have your apartment one day early? It may not cost much more than a hotel room, and would save you the headache of relocating in the morning. It's not a particularly attractive drive, and it would be just as well to cover that distance at night!
If that's not possible, I would follow kybourbon's advice and just find somewhere near your apartment.

We stayed at the Hotel Mach 2 a few years ago - it is really close and has a shuttle (although I don't think it runs that late - a taxi would be a very short trip)
