Hi, does anyone know of a Web site or a book that just has a few very simple straight-to-the-point expressions for traveling. (similar to in the Rick Steve's books) We will be visiting several countries and are not bringing a phrase book for each one. In the past we have just taken a printout of the words and questions we would use most and this has worked fine for us. I'm especially interested in Czech and Polish. Thanks.

Try Magellans...they have some great little pocket VERY thin phrase books. We have used them in Italy and France and they were very helpful.

www.locallingo.com is a Czech-specific site with a lot of good information, including language lessons and phrases.

All the guidebooks I've had include a few pages on these, so that shouldn't be a problem unless you aren't getting country-specific guidebooks. In that case, perhaps you could go to the library and copy those few pages from a guidebook (and at least, those won't be out of date).

YOu might still consider country-specific phrasebooks in the Dover See It and Say series. I have all of them, they are only a few dollars each, very small in size so fit in a pocket or purse easily (smaller than most traveler phrasebooks), and I know they have both Czech and Polish, as I bought them. It's a small investment and those can provide a little more useful information than a couple pages of phrases (like a good pronunciation good and a good section for restaurants, food, drink).

Right here on the Fodor's site....found it thanks to a posting last week. Go to resources, then you'll see various languages. That will take you to a menu that has basic phrases grouped by function (shopping, meals, accomodations, travel, etc) with phrases in the language, English translation, and pronunciation guide. When you click on the word, you hear it. It's been a wonderful help to me.

BTW, I bought the Rick Steves French/German/Italian phrase book. For about $5, it is a nice book with basic phrases that is small enough to carry around. It covers the languages I need for this trip.

Anne
