What's your budget? Grand Hotel Tremezzo is wonderful but very expensive. Views to die for.

With a car, I often suggest the west shore as a good location. Easy for day trips to CH and closer to Malpensa.

The Hotel du Lac in Varenna has its own parking. The eastern shore of the lake also offers easy day trips. It's about 2 hours to St. Moritz, but there are several nice mountain town destinations.

On one trip a few years ago, we drove a mountain road (beautiful in parts) to San Pellegrino Terme for the day. It's a spa town with some lovely buildings (esp. the Casino) and is the home of the San Pellegrino water company and at least one brewery (Via Priula). We were focused on World War I sights on that trip, and there is a Temple to the Fallen in the town as well as a couple of monuments in the area.

A few miles south of SPT, near Zogno, there is a cave complex (Le Grotte delle Meraviglie) only open twice a month between May and September. If your visit coincides with one of the open dates, I recommend this as part of a nice day trip through the mountains to SPT and beyond. But a warning: One man in our tour of the caves had trouble in a few places with claustrophobia.

We stayed at Hotel du Lac in Bellagio, which we loved. Ferry was just steps away; it was so relaxing.

We have spent a lot of time in Bellagio on four trips. It is in a perfect location, on the end peninsula on the lake. Great ferry service.

If you want a real Italian village try Argegno. The Belvedere Hotel sounds lovely although we preferred to self cater while we were there. It is on the ferry and bus route so easy to get around. Only one small shop and bakery but quite a lot of good restaurants. I would go back tomorrow if I did not live so far away. Enjoy Como, it is a beautiful part of Italy.
