Ladies-how many pairs of shoes?
#21
At very most 3 pair. One pair on my feet on the flight, and 2 in my suitcase (usually a 19 inch rollaboard).
I often take only 2 pair but can't manage just single pair like some REALLY light packers.
I don't usually take trainers (athletic shoes) since I much prefer a good walking shoe that can double duty as semi-dressed up.

I think winter travel is much easier in the shoe department. One really comfy but cute black oxford type shoe to go under the black pants worn everywhere. One cute pair of black high boots for under dresses at night. Done.
But summer travel! That's a different story. Sandals. If they're really cute they're not comfy and if they're comfy they're not cute. So must bring both. Then there is the color coordinated shoes to go with black skirts, white skirts, short skirts, long skirts, black capris, white capris, patterned capris, etc. What to do, what to do? I am leaving on Thursday for Italy and the pile of shoes next to my suitcase must be whittled!!!! So if you see me in Venice and I have on a cute pair of capris and an ugly pair of sandals, don't hold it against me. Wouldn't be caught dead in the combo at home!

Thank you, Cigalechanta, for the welcome back! Your warmth is always appreciated. Count me as another who misses the acerbic Thin one.
I do still look in on Fodors now and then, but since being bamboozled into working full time, I am usually too wiped out at night to do anything except slither between the sheets like a flattened snake.
Treble, it is most gracious of you to share your post with these irrelevant personal comments.

None of us likes shoes like CM. I love shoes, but I only bring 2 on vacation. A pair of trainers for walking around town and a pair of mid-heel strappy sandals for a nice evening out. Nothing more. I need the space for my souvenirs!
I'm so sorry Thin's on the outs again. Hopefully, he'll be back. I hate that he keeps getting banned...

I miss Thin the fashion maven too.
My vote is for 3;
the pair I wear on the plane (in my case, comfortable walking shoes-usually Mephistos or Arche , but the nicest, most attractive pair I can possibly find!), in my luggage, a pair of dress shoes for formal wear, going to the opera/theatre/ballet/fancier dining (for me Ferragamos or Stuart Weitzman pumps simply because they fit my feet well) and the in-between (usually dressy flats) , all of them always well worn in before I leave.
Like St. Cirque, and just like my mother, I'm an Imelda Marcos at home, but in Europe, I try to be practical.
If it's just one week in a city that I know well, I wear one, take another dressier pair.
It it's six weeks of cities/countryside/who knows what else, I always have 3.
But I always end up buying a pair (or two)...if I hit some good sales during my travels, particuarly in Jan. or July-Aug. That's part of the fun!
So I take 2, wear 1, maybe buy one or two more!

No Thin? Please say it isn't so! I've been reading The Pancaky Papers over and over. A MUST read for anyone heading to Prague!
<a snowboot with a flipflop> Have you been visiting with my mother? Ahhh, C_M is back. Life is good!

Ahhh~~ my Dear Madame!
How Swell to see you here
Nothing better than the sight of a Great Beauty, strolling along the Boulevard, with her shoes swinging off her skirt ~lol~
I know if our dear JohnThin were here, he would toast you with a gin ...why I will toast you myself and send you
I know I am not as good as some at this, but I hope you will appreciate all the gushing

I love shoes too. My husband (a musician), has even written a song about how much I love shoes, and how many pairs I own. I'm sure it's not on the order of ThinGorgus, but it's respectable when you take out statistical outliers like Thin, who just blows the curve for everybody.
So, here's what I do...As a subscriber to the Pack Light Pack Light Pack Light philosophy, and because for at least a couple of weeks a year I like to appear "low maintenance" I only take 3 pairs, and by the time I'm into my 4th day of my trip, I wish I'd taken only 2.
I take 2 pairs of black European walking shoes (Josef Seibels and/or Merrills), and one pair of strappy sandals or dress heals for going out at night. I always regret taking the dressier shoes because by the time the day is over and I've been all over the Louvre, nothing gets me to wear my dressy shoes, because all I want at that point is comfort.
I'm always glad to have a second pair of walking shoes though...there comes a point where even the best shoes rub you the wrong way if you wear them long enough.
Happy travels,
Jules

It is easier to take more shoes if you travel in warm weather..winter/fall is difficult for me because I wear boots..high heels in the evening, flatter for day, soft loafers if my feet are aching, etc...
I never wear anything that one could label "athletic"..someone might actually think I am fit or heaven forbid athletic LOL
So let me see, we are going to Buenos Åires, I will take soft flat comfy shoes for plane rides, seriously comfortable with a tiny platformish sole for walking ,heels for evenings, not quite as high for evenings..sandals..and maybe a pair of boots if we go to an estancia..how many is that ?

Do I get the prize?? One pair for 19 days in Europe. I have a pair of Eco shoes with a velcro strap around the back and 2 across the top of the foot. I can deal with swollen flight feet by loosening them, wear them with thick or thin socks, and then no socks for the dressier appearance of sandals. They have nice corrugated, slip-proof soles, and I can walk all day in them!!
