We read the tour books, which said men should wear a tie and jacket. That may be true if you are sitting on the floor with the season ticket holders, but we were in the last row of the upper balcony and the dress was more casual. My husband did not need a tie. In fact, the entrance to the upper balcony was separate from the main floor and we didn't mingle at all with the well-dressed crowd. This was before the remodel so it may be different now.

We got last minute tickets (box seats to the right of the stage) a few years ago (before remodeling.) I noted that the people in the orchestra were VERY well dressed. (La Bella Figura?) Fortunately, I was traveling with some very acceptable (washable) shirtwaist (! dresses at the time. So as long as I was seated I didn't feel out of place. (But chose not to mingle at intermission). We are long term subscribers to the Metropolitan Opera and I must say the Scala opera goers make most Met types look like peasants -
