Klagenfurt/Austria

We have only a few days after we leave Slovenia before we meet our kids in Austria and I was wondering about spending a few days in Klagenfurt area (Lake Worther, Graz). Any thoughts or ideas. Thanks you.

Well, it's certainly a beautiful area. What time of year will you be there?

We would be there the end of May. Where would you stay?

My recommendation would be Graz. Beautiful city. Can't recommend a hotel, though, because it's been a number of years since we were there and I don't even remember the name of the place. Maybe somebody else can help you with that.

There's lots of great stuff in that part of Austria-what types of things interest you?

My favorite schloss:

Beautiful countryside, lakes, wonderful small cities (Klagenfurt), and large (Graz). Just tell us what YOU like to do!

We enjoy the outdoors, hiking, biking etc. We also enjoy museums, there is very little that we don't enjoy.

I just spent three nights in Graz and loved the place. Definitely plan to go back - lots of pretty buildings, some weird modern ones, nice setting, lots of parks, shops, restaurants. I stayed in a good pension (www.pension-graz.at), but there are several hotels listed in the Fodors' Austria guide.

Ok then, what would you do if you have two whole days in Graz in the month of may? Can you give an itinerary, like wake up early in the morning, take train to schloss xxx have lunch at the plaza xxx, stroll through gardens at park xxx during the afternoon, end day with dinner at famous xxxx. On day 2 go to the armory and walk to xxxxx...

I have to work for 3 days in graz, so I plan to take a couple more for sight seeing... and then I was thinking to take a train to salzburg and stay 3 more days-... perhaps see the HOHE TAUERN???

Is this a reasonable plan? I already did Vienna, including a trip down the Danube and a visit to Melk Abbey...

I like natural sight seeing, like museums, love architecture... I just canīt figure out which castle to choose and which natural parks in order to make the most of my trip

thanks in advance!!!

No, because I'm not you. I suggest buying a guide book and deciding for yourself. I would point out that there's what sounds like an excellent open-air folk museum near by - I didn't get there because I was limping. There's also a Schloss on the outskirts I also skipped - too much baroque in Vienna.

There's an excellent deli just down a side street right in the city center that has wonderful open-faced sandwiches for lunch, sorry, didn't get the name. And see this post: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...2&tid=35092693 for a restaurant to avoid.
