calimocho- wine and flat soda?
Does anyone know if the spanish drink kalimotxo is "supposed" to use flat soda?

In its truest form kalimotxo uses cheap red wine and coke, but now that it's bottle, who knows. It is also served by a restaurant in NYC called "Pamplona".

Txori Bar in Seattle also serves kalimotxo.
But their "cava manzana verde" is the drink to order: cava, green apple purée and olive oil.

Robert is right. The part with the very cheap red wine is the most important part of it (I have never managed to like it).
It is mostly a drink for youngsters. Last year a group of friends from Algorta ( nowadays upstanding members of the community, working at the big banks and so on) came forward explaining how they had to invent it back in 72 during the town festival. They had bought a wine that came out bad, and the only solution they could find was to mix it with Coke. Now, looking back, they are sorry that they never thought of registering the name. Coca-Cola did it.
BTW, the "Agua de Bilbao" mentioned in the link is simply and mere champagne. Back at the beginning of the XX century, when things were going brilliant for the Bilbao industry, it was said that people were drinking champagne like water, and that´s why the name stayed.
Bye, Cova

Cove, I had my first taste of kalimotxo in Pamplona during the fiesta in 72 (I was very, very young at the time), but it was probably introduced to us from the boys from Algorta. The only wine available after the second day was "green wine", far too biter to drink without a little help from Coca-Cola.

Hmmmmmm.
ok, another question for the Basques-
At Txori Bar, they call their beer with lemon soda, a "lejilla".
Is that what you'd call it in Bilbao or Donostia?
In Pamplona we just call it a cerveza con limón. With gaseosa, it would be a "clara".
And is it really called a "champú" in Castellón? (I read that somewhere...)

"Clara" in both cases, although you should specify if you want it with lemon or with "gaseosa".
I tend to prefer the one with gaseosa, unless I am in a "KAS" region, because lemon Kas is not so sweet as the Fanta. Kas was a company from Vitoria, until it was bought by Pepsi, and they have managed to maintain its tanginess.

I didn't see this thread when I posted my Madrid/Clara question earlier.
So in Madrid, clara con limon is with fanta,
with soda gaseosa it's just Clara.
isn't there another phrase for ordering the beer/soda version in Madrid?
If not, my memory's going.
