Hi Cindy I was in the South of France 2 years ago and stayed outside of Nice in St. Paul Du Vance. We had a car ; but we also took the train alot of places. Villefranche was about a 45 minute train ride from Nice and from Nice you can take the train everywhere. Monte Carlo is really easy just get off the train and fallow the signs. Cann is also quite easy on the train. If you have a car it is worth driving to St. Paul Du Vance for the day or even a 1/2 day. If you really want to splurge have lunch at La Colombe d' or; it's amazing there is a famous art collection with Piccasso etc. The phone #is 33(0) 4 93 32 80 02. Viva La France!
Sherri Kardell p.s. The only place we really neede a car was St. Tropez.

I don't think Villefranche is that far from Nice by train. I looked at www.sncf.com and it looked like a journey of less than 10-15 minutes from Villefranche sur Mer to Nice.

The train is easy to use, a short distance from where the boats dock and inexpensive. If you are only going to Nice and Monte Carlo, I'd recommend it.
