I responded to your other post about Rome. I guess my main recommendation would be stay somewhere in Tuscany or around Florence that has a swimming pool. It can be a life-saver when kids are sick of sight-seeing, and it's great for adult relaxation too. I think the statue of David was very impressive to our son. The Boboli Gardens are usually a hit with kids; room to run around and a nice break from museums. It sounds like you will be going to Rome, Venice and Florence. I would recommend that you spend some time in the countryside of Tuscany in order to live like Italians do for a little while. Pick a rental within walking distance of a small town, so you can walk into it for dinner, espresso, the weekly farmer's market. I'm sure your kids would enjoy it...but don't forget about the pool. I can recommend Il Palagio in Panzano for all of the above, and it's centrally located for seeing San Gimignano, Siena, etc. With Rome and Venice already on the itinerary, I think a break in the countryside would be more popular than Florence, but if you can do both, even better.

There is a charming book called "Just Add Water," available in most Florence museum bookstores in several languages, which describes the adventures of a boy visiting his uncle in Florence. Many off-beat and unusual suggestions connected to well-known sites. Probably best suited for kids 8-10 and older.
